MEMBRANE 9.

Oct. 31. Windsor.

Grant to Matthew Bezil and his assigns of the custody and marriage of the heir of Giles de Cancellis and of the custody of the manor of Kenewedon, which he held in chief ; during the minority of the heir.

Appointment during pleasure of Peter de Genowre to the custody of the castle of Windlesore, and for this custody grant to him of the yearly castle guard rents of knights which are held of the castellany, with the new purpresture of the king brought into cultivation and 10l. a year by the hands of the bailiffs of Windlesor and one tun of wine yearly, so long as he keeps the castle.

Nov. 2. Windsor.

Grant for life to Leger (Leodegario) the Chaplain of the chantry in the hospital of St. James without Chichester, with 2d. a day from the sheriff of Sussex out of the issues of the county.

Signification to the pope that the king has appointed Master Robert Anketill, canon of Dol, king's clerk, as his proctor in the pope's court.

Protection with clause volumus until the quinzaine of Easter for George de Affuble.

Nov. 5. Windsor.

Simple protection until Midsummer for Peter de Geneve, going beyond seas, directed to all men of Ireland. Afterwards the clause volumus was added.

He has the like in England until his return.

Simple protection for John de Brademar, directed to all men of Ireland.

Grant during pleasure to Anian son of Oweyn that for his mill of Rywe, which is in the king's hands, he shall receive yearly by the hand of the justice of Chester 40s.

Appointment during pleasure of Nicholas de Ores to the custody of the county of Kent.

The like of the same to the keeping of the castles of Rochester and Canterbury, and mandate to Bertram de Crioyl to deliver them to him.

The like of Richard de Ponte to the keeping of the manor and hundred of Middelton.

The like of Thomas de Stanford, king's clerk, to keep all manner of the king's wards and escheats, in the counties of Nottingham, Derby, York, Northumberland, Lancaster, Westmeriland and Cumberland ; to enquire of those things which pertain to the same ; of serjeanties in these counties, who hold them and whether anything thereof has been alienated, by whom, and their value; also to keep the king's demesnes there and to enquire of those things pertaining thereto, together with the knights their fellows in the said counties.

The like directed to all mayors, reeves and bailiffs, citizens and burgesses of all cities and boroughs in the said counties.

Mandate to the sheriffs of the said counties not to intermeddle in any of these matters.

Exemption for life, at the instance of Simon de Norwico, king's clerk, of Ranulf le Cunte, his brother, from being put on assizes, juries or recognitions.

Mandate to the bailiffs of B. de Sabaudia of the honour of Richmond, the king having granted to his uncle P. de Sabaudia, their lord, the lands which are held of him of the lands of Normans, when they fall in, notwithstanding that the king might have them as escheats of the lands of Normans,—that when Clemencia countess of Chester dies, they immediately give seisin of the manors of Beinton and Fotston, which she holds of the honour of Richmond into the hands of their lord, as the king wishes that he shall not be impeded concerning these by any of the king's bailiffs.

Quitclaim to Warin de Bassingburn of 86 acres of land in Bassingburn, which the king exacted from him as his escheat of the lands of Bretons.

Presentation of Master Henry de Campeden to the church of Grimesby in the diocese of Lincoln, late of William Hardel.

The like of Gilbert de Stebenheth to that of St. Mary Graslane, Gloucester, in the diocese of Worcester.

Notification to the barons of the Exchequer that the king has given to his brother William de Valencia all the debts which William de Lancastre owed to the king: that he has taken into his hands all the debts which the latter owed to Aaron and Samuel de Eboraco and David de Oxonia, Jews, and any other Jews, and also all the debts which Peter de Brus owed to said Aaron de Eboraco, and has given these to his said brother; also that he has granted to Peter de Brus, one of the heirs of the said William de Lancastre, that as regards both the portion affecting him of the debts of the said William and his own debt, he and his heirs may pay off the amount to William de Valencia and his heirs or assigns at the rate of 200l. a year, half at the exchequer of Easter at the New Temple, London, and half at Michaelmas there, and if the said Peter make default at any term, the said barons shall cause the same distraint to be made as for the king's own debts.

Mandate to the barons of the Exchequer to cause this to be done and enrolled.

Presentation of Peter de Kyllum, chaplain, to the church of St. Mary, Oxford, in the diocese of Lincoln.

Exemption for life of Henry de Norwico, king's serjeant, from being put on assizes, juries or recognitions.

Appointment during pleasure of the good men of Selveston to the keeping of that manor, rendering 18l. a year for the profits of the said manor, on condition that they have no ingress into the park or woods belonging to the manor and take nothing thereof either green or dry.

Notification to such and such an abbot that the truce having expired with the king of France, and the king having sent a great company of knights beyond seas for the recovery of his rights this side and beyond seas, he is sending his clerks, Th. de Stanford and William de Axemue with the several sheriffs of the counties requesting him to listen favourably to what they will set forth in this business, and find money for the relief of the said expenses in such abundance that the king ought to compensate him.

Grant to Ellis de Rabayn, king's yeoman, of the wardship of the land and heirs of John de Hodebovill, with the marriage of the heirs.

Notification to Constance late the wife of Robert del Punddelarch that the king has granted to his brother William de Valencia, to whom he gave the lands late of the said Robert, that as regards all the lands which she has in dower of the said lands, she shall be intendant to him as her lord, and therefore commands her to take the same fealty to him as she took to the king not to marry without his assent and will.

Grant, at the instance of Aymer the king's brother, to the men of Sniterlegh, to wit, the parishioners of the said Aymer of that town, that from Christmas next for three years they shall not be distrained for any debt whereof they are not principle debtors or pledges.

Mandate to the sheriff of Northumberland to give seisin to Patrick earl of Dunbar of all the lands which Patrick his father held in chief and which fall to him by inheritance, the king having taken the homage of the said Patrick.

Exemption for life of Andrew de la Brach, serjeant of Eleanor countess of Leicester, from being put on assizes, juries or recognitions and from suit of the king's hundred of Kenetebyry, co. Berks.

Exemption of Henry Tnrbut from being put on assizes, juries or recognitions so long as, during the next five years, he is in the service of John de Grey, justice of Chester.

Pardon to Richard son of Jordan, clerk (clerico), for the death of Gregory Cornherth, as it appears by inquisition that he killed him by misadventure.

Grant to the king's uncle P. de Sabaudia that if he die, the king will not lay hands on his lands by reason of having the wardship thereof, nor on his goods found in the said lands, nor make seisin thereof to any of his heirs, nor permit any of his goods to be taken to the king's use, until his debts are paid out of the issues of his said lands; and grant that the executors of his will have free administration of his goods found in his lands.

Exemption for life of Master Henry Luvel, the queen's cook, from being put on assizes, juries or recognitions. Afterwards it was added : and that he be not made sheriff, coroner, escheator, forester, verderer, agister, regarder or other bailiff against his will.

Pardon to Conrad de Bruneswyc for the death of Thedric de Estland, as it appears by inquisition that he killed him by misadventure.

Grant to William de Ferrariis, earl of Dereby, that though he should be bound to the king in some debt, he may make his will so that by reason of such debt the king will not take his lands or goods into his hands or any bailiff intermeddle therein, but the earl's heirs answer for the same.

Pardon to Maud late the wife of Philip de Dorn for the death of the said Philip, on condition that she make peace with the relatives of the said Philip and stand her trial if anyone will proceed against her.

Mandate to Imbert de Pugeys to surrender to William de Valencia, the king's brother, the whole land in Baunton which he held of the king at farm in the same manner as he received the same and to do his homage to him for the other lands which he held of the king in fee in that town, the king having granted the same to his brother.

Appointment during pleasure of William de Norhampton, king's serjeant, to the keeping of the forest in the county of Rutland.

Grant to Hugh le Brun, the king's brother, count of Angouléme, and his heirs lawfully begotten, of 400 marks a year at the Exchequer in England, until the king provide him in wards, escheats or other land to that value.

Licence for Elias Plumbar of Rypell' to let to farm for six years from the Purification, 33 Henry III, the salt pit which the king gave to him in the isle of Olerun.

Appointment during pleasure of William de Plessetis, king's clerk, to the custody of the chamberlainship.

Commission to John de Gray, justice of Chester, of all the king's lands of the county of Chester and of North Wales, to wit, Ros, Rewennyoc, Defferencloid and Englefeld, so that he have all the issues from the Purification next, rendering to the king 500 marks a year, and that he keep all the castles in these lands at his own cost, and preserve the king's houses in the state in which they now are, and grieve no tenant but maintain them according to law and the custom of those parts ; saving to the king advowsons of churches, reliefs, wards, stews, parks, and forests as far as relates to venison and vert, and the pasture of which the said John shall not overcharge to the detriment of the king's deer; and saving also to the king the tallages of free boroughs, and all manner of escheats.

Memorandum that this compact is to be observed by the said John in time of peace, and such is the king's intention.

Mandate to all the tenants to do their homage and service to Henry de Percy their lord, the son and heir of William de Percy, the king having taken his. homage for all the lands which the said William held in chief.

Grant to John de Gray, justice of Chester, of the keeping of the land and heir of Hugh de Coronis and of the marriage of the heir.

Whereas the king granted to N. bishop of Durham that he might dispose at his will of the corn sown in the lands of his bishopric and church, and the bishop by reason of his cession, did not cultivate certain lands of his bishopric, grant that if the said lands are handed to any to cultivate, those who receive them shall be preserved harmless touching this.

Appointment during pleasure of John Silvestre, king's clerk, as warden of the mint throughout England; directed to moneyers, clerks, and all other ministers of the mint (monetarie) and changes throughout England.

Grant for the king's life to the prior and monks of Snelleshal may take yearly 30 cartloads of wood for their hearth in the forest of Whitlewode by view of the foresters of that forest.

Pardon to William de Wrimeford for the death of Reginald son of Robert de Chauners.

June 15. Woodstock.

Grant to Simon de Monteforti and Henry his son after him that when any escheats of the lands of Normans fall in of his fee in England, which the king is accustomed to retain in his hands, they may have free administration thereof or confer them at their will, until the land of England and Normandy are common.

Feb. 6. Clarendon.

Exemption for five years of Thomas Kyme, burgess of Northampton, from prises and tallages, provided that he stay so long in the service of S. de Monteforti, earl of Leicester, and Eleanor his wife.

The king has understood the form of the compromise between his kinsman Thibaut, king of Navarre, count palatine of Champagne and Brie, and the king's brother in law S. de Monteforti, earl of Leicester, to the following effect, that both kings shall compromise on the arbitration and award of certain good men on all discords and questions which have arisen since the said Thibaut became king of Navarre, to wit, on the king's side Raymond, bishop of Bazas, and William prior of Le Mas and on the side of the king of Navarre, Sancho Ferr', his seneschal of Navarre, and Leoninus de Sezannia, knight. And if they cannot agree, they shall take the matter before the said king and earl. Also in case of the death of either of his representatives the said Thibaut has appointed Hugh de Cornilon, knight, as a substitute, and in like manner the earl has appointed P. Caillau, citizen of Bordeaux. These four shall pronounce their award before Midsummer, 1249, and if they fail to do so, this compromise shall be null and void, except so far as progress has been made therein. If the king will not keep and observe the compromise, whatever the four arbitrators have caused to be restored, both moveables and hereditaments shall be given back on both sides. The king will ratify whatever compromise the said Simon, to whom he has committed the land of Gascony, may make, on condition that Nicholas de Molis be joined on the king's side with the bishop of Bazas, and William, prior of Le Mas, and that the earl may appoint a substitute in case any of the king's arbitrators die or be absent. Presentation of Arnald de Sancto Romano to the church of Langamarch, in the diocese of St. Davids [substituted for Buelt in the diocese of Llandaff].

Bond to William Artus, citizen of Bordeaux, at the exchequer of Easter next, in 100l. for Gerard de Blavia, to wit, 50l. arrears of the said Gerard's fee of 100l. a year, for Michaelmas term 31 Henry III and Easter term following, and 50l. for Michaelmas term 32 Henry III, which the said William lent to the said Gerard on his fee.

Exemption for life of William Giffard, yeoman of Robert Passelewe, from being put on assizes, juries or recognitions.

Mandate to the good men of Hertford, Esinden and Beyford to let William de Valencia have by gift of the king the tallage which the king lately assessed upon them.

Grant for life to Henry de Pinkeny, queen's yeoman, of the whole land which the king granted to Richard Marshal for his life in Scerberg, if he survive the said Richard.

Pardon to Nicholas the Carpenter of his outlawry when Agnes daughter of Alan appealed him of rape.

Mandate to Drew de Barentin to let the Friars Minors of Bordeaux have 250 pounds of Bordeaux out of the issues of the islands before Midsummer for the ransom of their place where their houses are situated.

Grant to William le Chamberlenc, king's yeoman, of the land late of Geoffrey de Childingwude in that town, who was outlawed for homicide, which land is the king's escheat by reason of his keeping of the heir of B. earl of Devon ; to hold to the said William during the minority of the heir.

Notification to the mayor, jurats and commune of Bordeaux that the king has taken under his special protection the Friars Minors of Bordeaux and at their request has granted to them the new place they have taken for their dwelling, and constituted himself their patron, and they are not to permit them to be molested therein : and the king's will is that there be built there a church in honour of St. Edward king and confessor, and the mayor for the time being shall lay the first stone in the king's name. And whatever good or ill is done to them the king will repute as done to himself.

Pardon to William de Huddeswell of his outlawry for a robbery charged against him by Master John le Romein, sub-dean of York.

Mandate to Peter Chaceporc and Th. de Neuwerc, guardians of the bishopric of Durham, to deliver all the issues thereof to Richard earl of Cornwall, so that no one have any part thereof by reason of any mandate directed or to be directed to them, until he is satisfied of 5,000 marks wherein the king is bound to him.

Grant to William de Valencia, the king's brother, and his heirs by his wife, of the wardship of that part of the lands of the honor of Lancaster in the king s hand by reason of his wardship of the son and heir of William de Lyndeseye, during the minority of the heir; and if the king can buy it, he will assign it to them in fee and inheritance; and this is not to be deducted from the 500l. a year granted to them by charter from the Exchequer.

March 18. Westminster.

Protection for one year for Henry son of Hugh, burgess of Ghent, his men, things and merchandise throughout the realm, and acquittance from prises for the proper merchandise of himself and his men.

Protection until Michaelmas next for William Bicke, burgess of Nottingham.

Pardon to Henry de Hybernia [substituted for Paris] for the death of Alexander Spygun.

March 24. Westminster.

Mandate to J. son of Geoffrey, justiciary of Ireland, to execute the king's former mandates to assign to William de Valencia, his brother, the liberties belonging to the assises and pleas of the county of Weseford extended to him as the purparty of his wife, one of the heirs of Walter Marshal sometime earl of Pembroke ; and he is to assign the same to him in the town of Ros, Carnebothe and Clumene, saving to the king the liberties belonging to his crown and dignity. And whereas the king commanded him to stock the said lands, he is to supply whatever is wanting of the said stock, that the king may hear no further complaint.

Licence after inquisition ad quod dammun made by the barons of London, for the prioress and nuns of St. Helen's, London, to enclose that lane which lay between their land on both sides, and to hold the same for ever with the will and assent of the said barons.

Power to Griffin son of Wenhunwin to conduct to the king Mereduc son of Maylgun and Howel son of Cadwathan, who wish to come to the king's peace, until Midsummer.

Grant to William de Valence, the king's brother, of the wardship of the manor of Drax, during the minority of the heir of William Paynel, with the marriage of that heir, if the king have not already given the marriage (illud) to William de Kantilupo.

March 31. Westminster.

Commission to the barons of Wynchelese of the said town for this year, to wit, from this Easter to Easter 34 Henry III for 130 marks, a moiety next Michaelmas and a moiety the following Easter, on condition that they are diligent in repairing and preserving the town against the sea, and that they show justice to all complainants and persons seeking justice in that town, according to the liberty and custom of the town, and if they do not do this and are convicted of injury against any one the king will take the town into his hands and punish the barons according to the quantity of their offence.

The like to the barons of La Rye of their town for 70 marks.

Presentation of Gerard de Belac to the church of Medburn and request to R. bishop of Lincoln to institute him, notwithstanding the king's late presentation thereto of Sampson de Sanford, king's clerk, into which he was deceived.

Grant to F. bishop of London, for a fine, of the wardship of the heirs of the land and heirs of Gilbert de Samford, with the marriage of the heir.

Robert de Stychel and Thomas de Wyndegat, monks of Durham, bringing news of the cession of N. their bishop, have letters of licence to elect directed to the prior and convent.

Presentation of Thomas de Anesty, chaplain, to the archdeaconry of Northumberland, in the king's gift by reason of the voidance of the bishopric of Durham ; directed to W. archbishop of York.

Pardon to Thomas son of William de Dikele for the death of Roger son of Avice de Horsefrith whom he killed by misadventure.

Presentation of William de Clifford to the church of Wessington in the diocese of York, in the king's gift by reason of the voidance of the bishopric of Durham.

Protection with clause volumus until Midsummer for the bishop of Chichester, gone beyond seas.

April 17. Westminster.

Appointment during pleasure of William de Horseden to the keeping of the manor and castle of the Peak, answering thereof at the Exchequer.

Grant to Amicia late the wife of Baldwin, earl of the Isle, of the wardship, during the minority of B. his son and heir, of his castles and lands which the king had in his hands at Easter this year, except advowsons, wards of knights' fees and other escheats, for 300l. [substituted for 400l.] a year at the Exchequer ; on condition that if during this period she permits herself to marry, the premises revert to the king, and if the king die she do her fealty and be answerable for the same to queen Eleanor as the guardian (ballie) of the king's heir and land during his minority.

[In the margin.] Afterwards she had pardon of 100l. to the barons of the Exchequer of the same date. [That is, a reduction from 400l. to 300l. as corrected in the grant.]

Appointment during pleasure of Robert le Vavasur, sheriff of Nottingham and Derby, to the keeping of the honour of Peverel of Nottingham; directed to sheriffs and bailiffs in whose bailiwicks the lands of the said honour are.

Mandate to the tenants to be intendant to him.

The like of Robert le Sauvage to the keeping of the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk with the castles of Norwich and Oreford.

Grant to Elias de Chillac of 30 marks a year at the exchequer of Michaelmas for his maintenance in the king's service, so long as he is in that service.

Grant to Robert de Stopham, king's yeoman, of 20l. a year so long as he has the keeping of the manor of Clarendon and the forest there.

Appointment as above of John de Eschalers to the custody of the counties of Cambridge and Huntingdon.

Bond to William de Valencia, the king's brother, in 100l. which he delivered into the hands of Geoffrey de Lezignan for his fee of Michaelmas term of his yearly fee of 200l. at the Exchequer.

Licence for Arnald Cotin, king's yeoman, to lease for six years the land which he has de ballio nostro in the island of Oleron.

Appointment during pleasure of Henry de Farlegh to the keeping of the county of Southampton.

April 28. Westminster

The like of John de Cormailles to the bailiwick of the forest in the county of Southampton which the said Henry held before de ballio regis.

The like of William de Tymnehid to the county of Wilts.

Mandate to Nicholas de Lusteshull to deliver the castle of Sarum to him to keep during pleasure.

The like to Fulk de Orreby to the custody of all the king's escheats in the county of Chester and in North Wales, as in advowsons, reliefs, wards, parks, stews and all manner of escheats and forests so far as relates to venison and vert, the pasture whereof is not to be overcharged by J. de Grey to whom the king committed all the lands of the said county and North Wales at farm.

The like of Godfrey de Schidemore to the counties of Somerset and Dorset.

Confirmation of a grant for her life by Maud late the wife of Richard de Ledecumb to Ernest de Nevill, her father, of the whole land which she holds in dower in the town of Durinton, for 20s. a year payable to her in her recluse's cell (reclusorio) and ½ mark and a robe a year which he has granted to her of his liberality.

Grant to P. bishop of Hereford that he may take charge of the ditches round the city of Hereford and put fish in them to his own use so long as he lives, saving to the king and his heirs their fishings therein.

Grant to Master Albert, papal notary, of 40 marks a year at the Exchequer, until the king provide for him more amply.

May 1. Westminster

Protection with clause columus for Bartholomew Pecche, gone beyond seas on an embassage of the king, so long as he is beyond seas.

Grant during pleasure to Fulk de Orreby of the keeping of all the king's escheats in the county of Chester and in North Wales, as above, and appointment of him to view that no one fishes in the king's stews, and to keep the king's venison and vert in the parks and the forests there, and to view the detriment of the king's lands overcharged with pasture in the latter. And the king is unwilling that prejduice shall arise by this mandate to the king's bailiffs who are enfeoffed.

Mandate to John de Grey to admit him to this.

Whereas M. countess of Lincoln, late the wife of W. earl marshal, recovered before the king seisin of a third part of the lands of her husband in Ireland, and the king heretofore commanded the justiciary to assign to her a third part of the said lands in bulk and not from each parccl, and he accordingly assigned to her the whole county of Kyldare, the manor of Fothered and land to the value of 62l. 17s. 4d. a year in Aboy, but did not give her seisin of the castles in the county of Kyldare, because there was no mention made in the king's letters of castles; mandate to him to give her seisin of the castles of Kyldare and Carbrye in that county. And whereas the earl was seised when he married her of the said 62l. 17s. 4d. of land in the manor of Aboy, which fall to her as a portion of her dower, mandate to him, notwithstanding the seisin which by order of the king he gave to William de Cantilupo of the manor of Aboy, to cause her to be reseised of the said 62l.17s. 4d. of land, and the said William shall recover what is deficient in his purparty against his co-parceners and the co-heirs of the earl marshal.

Appointment of Master Simon de Wauton and Stephen Bauzan with the sheriff of Worcester and the coroners of that county to make an inquisition touching the persons drowned and killed lately at Kemeseye, whereof many persons appeal many others, and many are charged as well of the fact as of the instigation, as for instance the whole household of the bishop of Worcester of Kemeseye and of R. treasurer of Lychfeld ; and mandate to them to meet on the morrow of St. Laurence the Martyr at Worcester on this horrible deed, to put the guilty in prison and certify the king hereof. Inspeximus of letters of W. archbishop of York, F. bishop of London and W. bishop of Bath and Wells, requesting the king's consent to and confirmation of a provision which by order of the pope they made for the maintenance of N. sometime bishop of Durham, to wit, of the manors of Houeden, Stocton and Esinton with their members, amongst which members the sokes of Weleton, Clif and Rykehal are extended, as belonging to the manor of Houeden, and Herdwic as member of Stocton, and Shotton as member of Esinton; as the guardians of the said bishopric have taken the said sokes and members into the king's hands although his consent thereto followed after the provision. Grant to Peter de Sabaudia of the castle and honour of Hastinges to hold until out of the issues of the honour, whereby the castle shall be fortified, he have caused it to be fortified.

Notification that, whereas the king has committed to the said Peter the issues of the lands late of Theobald le Butiller and Richard de Burgo and the honour of Hastings, with the marriage of the heir of the said Theobald, to fortify the castles of Hastinges and La Rye, he shall not be bound to render account for these.

Grant to him of the wardship of the lands and heir of Richard de Burgo, with escheats falling in, to fortify the castle of Hastings out of the issues of the wardship and then the castle of La Rye if anything remains over.

Grant to Leger de Hampton, chaplain, of the wardenship of the hospital of lepers without Chichester to celebrate divine service therein, as William Burdun, chaplain, who is dead, had the same; with mandate to the dean and chapter of Chichester to admit him.

Notification to archbishops, bailiffs and others of Gascony and the isle of Oleron, that the king has granted by charter to Edward his first born son the said land and isle with all their appurtenances without reserve, to hold to him and the heirs of his body with all liberties and free customs thereto belonging, as the king or his predecessors held or ought to have held the same; and mandate to them to be intendant to him as their liege lord in all things pertaining to the said lands of Gascony and the isle of Oleron. Grant to Pernell, nurse of Edmund the king's son, and to Clement Folyot, her husband, for the life of the said Pernell, of 8 marks 20d. of the 9 marks, 20d. which Ellen the king's nurse used to receive yearly by the hands of the sheriff of Essex out of the king's appointed alms.

The like to Agnes, nurse of Beatrice the king's daughter and Bartholomew de Eversle her husband, for their lives, of the 9 marks, 20d. which Ellen, the king's nurse, used to receive yearly by the hands of the sheriff of Surrey out of the king's appointed alms, and 1 mark of the 9 marks, 20d. which the said Ellen used to receive by the hands of the sheriff of Essex.

Writ de intendendo to the tenants of the priory of Merton in favour of Eustace, canon of the house, elected to be prior thereof.

Royal assent to the election of Thomas, prior of St. Werburgh's, Chester, to be prior (rectius abbot) of that house, and mandate to the bishop of Coventry and Lichfield to do his part herein.

Protection with clause volumus for P. bishop of Hereford, going beyond seas on the king's affairs, until his return.

Mandate to Res Vachan (jureni) and Res de Cardigan to deliver the 50 marks wherein they are bound to the king at Michaelmas, 33 Henry III, part of their fine of 300 marks, to Robert Walerand for the works of the castle and town of Cardigan.

Simple protection without term for the Crutched Friars (fratres de ordine Sancte Crucis).

Royal assent to the election of Walter de Kircham, dean of St. Peter's, York, to be bishop of Durham, with mandate to Peter Chaceporc to give him seisin of the castles of Durham and Norham.

Mandate to sheriffs and bailiffs to provide juries from within liberties and without when so required by William le Bretun and William de Axemuth whom the king is sending to make inquisition touching certain trespasses committed in the realm.

Grant to Stephen de Salinis of 20l. a year at the Exchequer, until the king provide for him in wards or escheats.

Grant for life to Ellis de Ekingeham of the manor of Langlegh and Rokele, which he holds de ballio nostro.

Oct. 22. Westminster.

Grant to Stephen de Spineto of the whole land late of Edric le Butiler in Colton, which is the king's escheat of the lands of Normans, to hold for 6l. 7s. 5¼d., its extent, which amount is to be deducted from his yearly fee of 20 marks at the Exchequer, which the king granted to him until he provide for him in wards and escheats.

Grant to the men of the isle of Gernere that they and their heirs who will fish between Michaelmas and Easter may sell when and as often as they choose, and after Easter they may sell three times a week in the king's power fresh and salt fish and make their profit thereof without impediment of the king's bailiffs, saving to the king the customs due thereof.

Mandate to William de Fortibus to deliver the castles of Corfe and Shireburn which were in the keeping of Hugh de Vivona, his father, to Bartholomew Pecche, to keep during pleasure.

Simple protection for three years from Michaelmas in this year for Robert, parson of the church of Houton, gone to the land of Jerusalem.

Appointment of P. bishop of Hereford, and Peter Chaceporc, king's clerk, archdeacon of Wells, as the king's proctors to further his affairs in the court of the pope.

Grant to the said Peter that if he die on this journey, the executors of his will shall be quit of all accounts and reckonings for the time that he was keeper of the wardrobe, but if he return, he shall render account of the receipts and expenses for the time that he ought to render account and has not done so, but he shall be absolved from rendering any account so long as he is on the king's embassage.

Grant to him that he may make his will of his goods so that his heirs or assigns or executors be not compelled for any debts wherein he was bound to the king until SS. Simon and Jude, 33 Henry III, except for the payment of 20l. a year at the terms which the king granted to him before.

Grant to P. bishop of Hereford that if he die on this journey, the executors of his will shall come to the king and find security for the payment of his debts to the king within a year, and the king will cause the bishop's goods to be delivered to the executors without withdrawal, diminution or charge, for the execution of his will.

Protection with clause volumus for R. le Bigod, earl of Norfolk and marshal of England, going to Lyon, until his return.

Grant, for 60 marks, to John de Romundeby of the wardship of the land and heirs of Richard de Brunton, with the marriage of the heirs.

Oct. 3. Windsor.

Appointment, during pleasure, of Maud de Lacy, late the wife of Peter de Genevre, to the keeping of the castle of Windlesor, and grant to her for this of the yearly castle-guard rents of knights which are held of that castellany, with the king's new purpresture brought into cultivation, and with 10l. a year which she ought to receive by the hands of the bailiffs of Windesore and one tun of wine yearly of the king's gift so long as she keeps the castle.

And she is to pay the stipends of two watchmen and one gardener there out of the profits which she receives for the said keeping.

The like of Peter de Sabaudia to the keeping of the lands late of A. countess of Eu, and of William de Keu.

Grant to the men of Kardigan that in their town there shall be a gild of merchants as in the town of Bristol, and that for three years from All Saints in this year they shall take in their town on every tun of wine 1d., on every last of herrings 4d., on every sack of wool 2d., on every cartload of merchandise 1d., on every horseload ½d., on every ox or cow sold ½d., on every horse sold 1d., and on every tun of honey 1d., for fortifying their town.
