It is deemed inadvisable to increase the size of this already bulky volume by the addition of a preface, but two papers in it deserving special attention should be pointed out, viz., the long and detailed description of the great fire of London, pp. 712, 713; and the account of the sale of the goods of Charles I. Among the purchasers of these were Lady Cromwell, Col. John Hutchinson, and also Sir Balthazar Gerbier, who bought the portrait of Charles on horseback for 200l., and that of Charles V., Emperor, for 150l.
The Addenda up to 1670 are here inserted because the Calendar of Charles II., which I could not hope to complete, is now passing into the competent hands of my successor, Mr. F. H. Blackburne Daniell, whose volume for 1671 will appear almost at the same time as the present volume.
