" 2 John Browne, Chatham. Navy Comrs Has entered 20 more ropemakers, making 66 spinners, each of whom, by working early and late, spins 115½ lbs. in a day and a half, making together 7,623 lbs. They must have 11 hatchellers and 12 labourers to wind up and turn the wheel, 3 to open, and 4 to cleanse the hemp, and 2 boys, who, with the foreman and master, make 102. If he may keep the men constantly to rope making, will very quickly have a good quantity of cordage, and if made now, it will be far better than that made in the summer. Noted to write to all the yards not to make any allowance for extra work by nights or tides in the docks, without the approbation of the navy office, or the Commissioner upon the place. 3

Drake, gunners of the Portland, are satisfactory, and as Phillpott has been removed from his employment by the Generals at sea, will certify the navy treasurer, so that he may receive his wages. Will have to report on the accounts of the gunner of the Nantwich, they being satisfactory. 4

There is great need of more ropemakers, as the stores are very bare; only 5 or 6 of those named can be procured at Chatham, the rest must be had from London. Repairs of ships. 5
" " Wm. Smith " There are 20 spinners and 7 labourers employed in the ropeyard at Woolwich, having 3 spinning wheels, could employ 70 spinners and labourers, and thus spin and lay a ton per day. 6

Have seen a proclamation by the Admiralty at Amsterdam, of the prohibition by the States General of the export of hemp, yarn, or cordage, for a month, there having been two storehouses of it burnt. Mr. Wood's correspondent at Hamburg hopes to secure 500 bundles of hemp at Lubec, stayed there, money being so scarce, and the commissions high. Ask an order to the treasurer to pay 2,000l. to Mr. Wood in part payment for it, and also for some tar, and directions whether the tar and hemp shall be brought from Lubec overland, or through the Baltic, as the Danes are making great preparations. 76

Jan. 24 Officers and company of the Satisfaction. Adm. Com. The chief cause of the sudden sickness of the men on board was the brackishness and badness of the beer, and drinking it when they returned from their duty of watching in the boats. 79
" 26 T. Lodington " Sends an account of provisions shipped on board the Sapphire and Two Brothers, for Jamaica, with an estimate of their cost, total, 1,187l. 12s. 10d. There was no fruit sent either by Capts. Morgan or Morley, as it was thought more convenient by the Navy Commissioners to supply it abroad, and order was given to Mr. Hempson accordingly, who charged 700l. thereon; has never received any account from him. Had no notice of the Elias being ready until the 19th instant, and there has been no delay since. 80, 81

With letter from Tailer to Capt. Hen. Tupe, at Horsleydown, desiring him to send over Williamson, as he will be taken in exchange for himself, if accompanied by a certificate from the Admiralty Commissioners. 93, 94

Jan. ? John Bilton, shipwright of Deptford. Adm. Com. Petitions for the carpenter's place in the 4th-rate frigate building at Deptford. Has sustained many losses at sea, having been cast away in the Island Merchant, and taken in the Marmaduke by Prince Rupert, who kept him prisoner some time; made his escape, and had to travel 600 miles on foot to get a safe passage to his wife and 6 children. Prince Rupert would have given him anything to win him to his service, but he was always firm to the Parliament and against the royal party; since his return, has been employed in the yards at Deptford and Woolwich, and is well known to the officers there.
