CANONS WHOSE PREBENDS CANNOT BE IDENTIFIED

The names of canons of St. Paul's who occur during the period 1066-1300, but who cannot be assigned to particular prebends, are given below in three lists, arranged in alphabetical order of first names.

I. CANONS WHO OCCUR IN THE PERIOD BEFORE THE PREBENDAL SYSTEM WAS ESTABLISHED (i.e. before c. 1100)

Edward

Archdcn. of London before 1089. Presum. can. (see above p. 8).

Engelbric

Occ. as can. 1086, holding land of bp. of London in Stepney, as he held it in 1066, without power of sale, and therefore perhaps as preb. (Domesday Book 1 fo. 127b; cf. Gibbs p. xxiii). Possibly to be identified with Ingelric, pr., who occ. [1067] (Regesta 1 nos. 8, 21), and 1069 (ibid. no. 28), who gave land in Essex, where he was tenant before 1066, to St. Martin le Grand, London, before May 1068 (ibid. no. 22); king's chapl. and first dean of St. Martin le Grand (see Round, Commune of London pp. 28-36).

Gueri

Occ. as can. 1086, holding land of cans.' demesne in Twyford, an estate which never became prebendal (Domesday Book 1 fo. 127b; cf. Gibbs p. xxiii and no. 178; see also Durand, preb. of Twiford, above p. 80).

Sired

Occ. as can. 1066, holding land of bp. of London in Stepney, with power of sale (Domesday Book 1 fo. 127a). Presum. d. by 1086 (ibid.). Possibly father of Ailward, son of Sired, preb. of Newington (see above p. 65). Possibly to be identified with 'Syredus', said to have been dean before 1066 (cat. of deans in Dugdale and Newcourt, see Brooke, Deans p. 233).

Walter

Occ. as can. 1086, holding land of cans.' demesne in St. Pancras (Domesday Book 1 fo. 128a). Presum. not yet prebendal, although estate later part of preb. of Pancratius (see Gibbs p. xxiv).
