Osbern de Auco

First preb. in cats., 'Osbernus [Osbertus, Cat. II] de Auco'. Not otherwise known, unless to be identified with Osbern, son of Hugh of Eu, who occ. as vassal of count of Eu in Hants, [1070 × 71] (Regesta 1 no. 59*a, noted ibid. 11 391).

Robert de Auco

Occ. in cats. between Osbern de Auco and John of Canterbury, 'Robertus filius eius', i.e. son of Osbern de Auco. Prob. not yet can. when occ. 1104/5 (WD 4 fo. 19/23r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 61b). First occ. as can. 1111/12 (A/24/521, pd. in Rep. p. 26a). Last occ. 1150/1 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 84v, from missing Liber F fo. 35).

John of Canterbury alias Bellesmains (fn. 1)

Occ. in cats. between Robert de Auco and William de Belmeis II, 'Johannes de Cantuar'. Does not occ. as can., but presum. became can. at or soon after candidacy for archdcnry. of Middlesex [Sept. 1152 × c. June 1153]. Treas. of York, c. 1154-1162. Bp. of Poitiers, el. 1162 (Robert of Torigny, in Chrons. of Stephen, Hen. II and Ric. I, ed. R. Howlett (Rolls ser. lxxxii) IV 214), cons. 23 Sept. 1162 (Diceto 11 120).

William de Belmeis II (of Beaumais) (fn. 2)

Occ. in cats. between John of Canterbury and John de Sancto Laurentio, 'Willelmus de Belemeis [Belemeyns, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. [1169] (St. Paul's almoner's cart.: Cambridge, St. John's College, MS. S. 25 fo. 9v), (fn. 3) but perhaps appd. before May 1162 by his uncle, Richard de Belmeis II, bp. of London (1152-62) (G.F. p. 286). Occ. this preb. [1174 × 80] (Gibbs no. 160), and 1183/4 (G.F.L. no. 403). Last occ. 1183/4 (ibid.), and [c. 1185] (A/33/702), (fn. 4) but perhaps occ. later [c. 1181 × 1187] (G.F.L. no. 405), and prob. still alive 25 July 1184 or 1185 (Gibbs no. 223). Son of Robert de Belmeis, and nephew of Richard de Belmeis II, bp. of London (Gibbs no. 69).

John de Sancto Laurentio

Occ. in cats. between William de Belmeis II and Luke the chapl., 'Johannes de Sancto Laurentio'. First occ. as can. [1183 × 91] (Moore, St. Barts. 1 218-19). Occ. this preb., as successor of William de Belmeis II, before Dec. 1192 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 32v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's 'in thecis'). (fn. 5) Occ. as can. c. 1192 (D.S.R. I). Last occ. 1 March 1223 (A/29/344). D. as can. before March 1226 (Hackett, Reg. Eleemosynariae p. xlvii). (fn. 6) Commem. 24 Aug. (Obit. I fo. 13v), 25 Aug. (Obits. II fo. 109r, III fo. 96r, IV pp. 69, 94). So presum. d. Aug. 1224 or Aug. 1225.

Luke the chaplain

Occ. in cats. between John de Sancto Laurentio and William de Lichefeld, 'Lucas ca. th. domini regis' (Cat. I), 'Lucas th' domini regis' (Cat. II). Does not occ. as can., but possibly occ. in St. Paul's deed, n.d. (A/22/1531 and A/22/1611). Controller of king's wardrobe, Jan. 1224-Apr. 1227 (Tout, Chapters vi 27). Dean of St. Martin le Grand, to 1228 (ibid. 1 195-6). Abp. of Dublin, el. before 13 Dec. 1228 (C.P.R. 1225- 32 p. 232), cons. after 30 Apr. 1230 (C.C.R. 1227-31 p. 351).

M. William de Lichefeld (fn. 7)

Occ. in cats. between Luke the chapl. and Hugh de Mortuo Mari, 'Willelmus de Lich [Lichefeld, Cat. II]'. Occ., not called can., before July 1228 (St. Barts. Hosp., box Little Wakering, no. 208). (fn. 8) First occ. as can. between Oct. 1229 and June 1230 (Gibbs no. 64). Occ. this preb. 26 Jan. 1251 (Visitations 1249-52 p. 7). Last occ. 5 Oct. 1258 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 97r, from missing Liber F fo. 143). Commem. 12 Aug. (Obit. II fo. 108v), 11 Aug. (Obit. IV pp. 69, 90). If d. as preb., presum. d. Aug. 1259.

M. Hugh de Mortuo Mari

Occ. in cats. between William de Lichefeld and Antony Bek, 'Hugo de Mortuomari [Mortuo Mari, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. 29 Feb. 1260 (A/41/1474). Last occ. as can. 15 Oct. 1268 (Reg. W. Giffard (York) p. 142). Also archdcn. of Canterbury, last occ. 7 Dec. 1272 (C.P.R. 1272-81 p. 2). Possibly to be identified with Hugh de Dodingham, preb. of Islington (see above p. 58).

Antony Bek

Occ. in cats. between Hugh de Mortuo Mari and Richard de Swinfield, 'Antonius Bec [de Bek, Cat. II]'. Occ. as can. twice only: 9 May 1277 (WD 16 fos. 134/136r- 135/137r), and 25 June 1278 (WD 1 fo. 107b). Presum. transf. to preb. of Totenhall after 1280.

M. Richard de Swinfield

Occ. in cats. between Antony Bek and Robert de Ros II, 'magister Ricardus de Suinefeud' (Cat. I), 'Ricardus de Swynefeld' (Cat. II). Does not occ. as can., but archdcn. of London by Sept. 1281, to March 1283.

M. Robert de Ros II

Occ. in cats. between Richard de Swinfield and William de Bray, 'Robertus de Ros'. First occ. as can. 19 July 1287 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 135r, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'T'). Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 9) Last occ. 13 Oct. 1310 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 24v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's 'in thecis'). Possibly to be identified with Master R. de Roos who was commem. 15 Nov. (Obit. IV p. 72). Presum. a different individual from M. Robert de Ros, archdcn. of London by May 1285, to June 1290 or later (see above p. 12 and below p. 95).
