Karolus of Chichester

First preb. in cats., 'Karolus de Cicestria'. Not otherwise known, unless to be identified with Charles, first precentor of Chichester, who occ. c. 1122 (see Acta of the Bishops of Chichester, 1075-1207, ed. H. M. Mayr-Harting (Canterbury and York Soc. lvi) p. 211).

Wulfred son of Goldman

Occ. in cats. between Karolus of Chichester and Geoffrey son of Wulfred, 'Aluredus filius Goldmanni'. Alured not otherwise known, and cat. entry almost certainly in error for Wulfred, father of Geoffrey (see below) and Robert (preb. of Portpool, cf. above p. 71) (see also Brooke, Composition p. 122 n. 63). Perhaps to be identified with Wlueredus, can. and pr., who occ. 1104/5 (WD 4 fo. 19/23r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 61b), and Wlfredus, can., who prob. d. before Apr. 1138 (Gibbs no. 218).

Geoffrey son of Wulfred

Occ. in cats. between Wulfred son of Goldman and Walter de Dunstanvill, 'Galfridus filius eius', i.e. son of Wulfred. Possibly first occ. as can. 19 July 1111, as 'alter Gaufridus' (? to distinguish him from Geoffrey Masculus, preb. of Hoxton (cf. above p. 55), WD 4 fos. 53/57v-54/58r, pd, in Rep. pp. 67b-68a), and cf. 'Gaufridus canonicus' who occ. c. 1128 (Davis, London lands p. 59) and [1111 × 35] (Gibbs no. 216). First certain occ. as can. 1132/3 (WD 4 fo. 53/57r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 67b). Last certain occ. 1150/1 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 84v, from missing Liber F fo. 35), but may occ. later, [1138 × Sept. 1152] (WD 4 fo. 44/48r, pd. in Rep. p. 66a) (fn. 1) and [Apr. 1138 × c. 1154] (Gibbs no. 176). (fn. 2) Brother of Robert son of Wulfred, preb. of Portpool (see, e.g., ibid.).

Walter de Dunstanvill or d'Unfranville (fn. 3)

Occ. in cats. between Geoffrey son of Wulfred and Walter de Insula, 'Walterus de Dunstanvill [dunfranvile, Cat. II]'. Not otherwise known.

Walter de Insula (fn. 4)

Occ. in cats. between Walter de Dunstanvill and Nicholas, 'Walterus de Insul' '. Does not occ. as can. Possibly to be identified with Walter de Insula, royal clk. and justice, who occ. from c. 1163 to c 1176 (see Eyton, Itin. Hen. II, index s.v. Insula; Recueil des Actes de Henri II, ed. L. V. Delisle and E. Berger (Paris, 1909-27), introductory vol. p. 468).

M. Nicholas (fn. 5)

Occ. in cats. between Walter de Insula and Simon of Gloucester, 'Nicholas nepos archidiaconi'. Occ., not yet can., [1169] (Gibbs no. 134) and [1183/4] (Gibbs no. 69). Perhaps not can. until after c. 1192 (does not occ. in D.S.R.). Occ. as can. after June 1199 (Gibbs no. 135), (fn. 6) and d. before March 1204 (Gibbs nos. 136-7). Grandson of Nicholas Crocemannus, preb. of Oxgate (see above p. 67).

M. Simon of Gloucester

Occ. in cats. between Nicholas and John Belemains, 'Simon de Glocestria [Gloucestria, Cat. II]'. Occ., prob. not yet can., 16 May 1207 (cart. of Hospitallers: B.M., Cotton MS. Nero E. vi fo. 205r). First occ. as can. 13 Sept. 1208 (charter roll of Holy Trinity, Aldgate: B.M., Cotton Roll xiii. 18 no. 21). Last occ. [c. 1214 × Sept. 1216] (A/35/941). (fn. 7) Possibly to be identified with S., archdcn. of Colchester, who occ. [c. 1214 × Sept. 1216] (see above p. 19).

John Belemains

Occ. in cats. between Simon of Gloucester and Henry de Cornhill, 'Johannes Belemains [Belemeyns, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. [c. 1216 × ?Apr. 1222] (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 133r-v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'T'), (fn. 8) but prob. transf. to preb. of Chiswick before Oct. 1217.

M. Henry de Cornhill

Occ. in cats. between John Belemains and Roger de Weseham, 'Henricus de Cornhull'. Already can., presum. this preb., on appt. as chanc. of St. Paul's 28 Oct. 1217 (Richardson, Guala p. 259 no. 2). Presum. transf. to preb. of Finsbury between June 1229 and Sept. 1241.

M. Roger de Weseham (fn. 9)

Occ. in cats. between Henry de Cornhill and Stephen de Sandwic, 'Rogerus de Weseham'. Does not occ. as can. Also archdcn. of Oxford from 1236; dean of Lincoln from 1239. Bp. of Coventry and Lichfield, prov. and cons. between May and July 1245.

M. Stephen de Sandwic

Occ. in cats. between Roger de Weseham and William Lupus, 'Stephanus de Sandwic [Sandwik, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. 2 March 1248 (Watney, St. Thos. Acon p. 238), and Sept. 1248 (A/35/928). Presum. transf. to preb. of Mapesbury some time before 1255. Also archdcn. of Essex by Feb. 1253, to Aug. 1265 or later.

M. William Lupus

Occ. in cats. between Stephen de Sandwic and Philip Lovel, 'Willelmus Lupus commutat.'. Does not occ. as can. Prob. to be identified with M. William Lupus (Le Loup), archdcn. of Gloucester, 1245-48; archdcn. of Lincoln from 1248, to d. in 1255 (Chron. Maj. v 534).

Philip Lovel

Occ. in cats. between William Lupus and Henry of Sandwich, 'Philippus Lovel'. Presum. transf. to preb. of Islington between Oct. 1257 and Dec. 1259.

M. Henry of Sandwich (fn. 10)

M. Nicholas of Ely

Occ. in cats. between Henry of Sandwich and Bartholomew de Regio, 'Nicholaus de Ely'. Does not occ. as can. Archdcn. of Ely, 1249-66. King's chanc., 1260-61, 1263 (Tout, Chapters VI 5). Disp. for plurality 31 Oct. 1252 (Reg. Innoc. IV no. 6066), and 11 July 1257 (Reg. Alex. IV nos. 2104, 2111). Bp. of Worcester, el. by June, cons. Sept. 1266.

M. Bartholomew de Regio

Occ. in cats. between Nicholas of Ely and John de Luco, 'Bartholomeus de Regio'. Occ. as can. once only, 10 Sept. 1269 (C.C.R. 1268-72 p. 79). Illegitimate son of king John, papal chapl., Dominican friar (see e.g., Reg. Innoc. IV no. 6151).

M. John de Luco

Occ. in cats. between Bartholomew de Regio and Thomas de Northflete, 'Johannes de Luc. [Luco, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. 20 Nov. 1280 (Reg. W. Wickwane, ed. W. Brown (Surtees Soc. cxiv) p. 268). Transf. to preb. of Islington before Apr. 1295.

M. Thomas de Northflete

Occ. in cats. between John de Luco and John de Sancto Claro, 'Thomas de Northflet [Northflete, Cat. II]'. Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 11) Occ. as can. 11 Apr. 1295 (Statutes p. 94). Presum. transf. to preb. of Chamberlainwood before Feb. 1299.

M. John de Sancto Claro

Occ. in cats. between Thomas de Northflete and William de Chaddleshunt (Reginald de Sancto Albano in Cat. II), 'Johannes de Sancto Claro'. First occ. as can. 28 Feb. 1299 (WD 1 fo. 71b). Occ. as can. 9 Apr. 1303, cited before abp. for pluralism, apostasy and illegitimacy (Reg. Winchelsey 1 452). Depr. before Jan. 1304 (Adami Murimuth. Chron., ed. T. Hog (Eng. Hist. Soc., 1846) p. 4).
