Richard II, 1377-1399

Twenty-four parliaments were held during the reign of Richard II, for twenty-three of which the rolls have survived, and even though that of the September 1388 parliament has been lost, fortunately the text of the common petition was preserved by a chronicler. For the parliaments of February 1388 (the 'Merciless Parliament') and September 1397 (the 'Revenge Parliament'), more than one roll has survived: the additional rolls were used to record the judicial proceedings against those accused of high crimes against the crown. The parliament of October 1399, which was initially summoned in Richard's name, did not meet until after his deposition on 30 September, and is thus included among the parliaments of Henry IV's reign.
