243.	NORMAN DE SWYNFORD.
	Writ, Guldeford, 26 July, 42 Edward III.
LINCOLN.	Inq. (indented) taken at Lincoln, Thursday the feast of St. Bartholomew, 42 Edward III.
	Brauncewell. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the heirs of William Bardolf by knight’s service. Lee. 10s. yearly rent issuing from a messuage formerly belonging to William de Fynchyngfeld, which Norman demised for life to one William Flecch’ for 10s. yearly rent payable to him and his heirs. The messuage is held of John duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Richmond, by knight’s service. Lee. The manor, with appurtenances in Lee, Gaytburton, Scosthorn, Kesceby, Upton and Stowe St. Mary, held for life by grant of John de Brewes by an award (per consideracionem) of the king’s council, rendering 20 marks yearly to the said John and Joan his wife and the heirs of John. The reversion of the manor after Norman’s death belongs to John and his heirs. The manor is held of John duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Richmond, by knight’s service. Immediately after Norman’s death John de Brewes entered on the manor as his right by reversion. The said Norman held no other lands &c. in the county. He died in Lee manor on Monday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 42 Edward III. John his son, aged 23 years and more, is his heir.

244.	ROBERT SEYNCLER.
	Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Robert, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 2 March, 42 Edward III.
SOMERSET.	Inq. taken at Montacute, 6 June, 42 Edward III.
	Stapelton by Mertok. Two-thirds of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of half a knight’s fee. The extent includes 2 osier beds, a custom of 13 lambs at Midsummer, 21 cocks and 48 hens at Martinmas for churchscot (churs’), and a custom of 11 1/2 geese at the gule of August. Somerton. A messuage and 40a. arable, held of Elizabeth countess of Kent by service of 20s. yearly. He died on 2 May, 33 Edward III. Richard his son was his heir, and at the time of his father’s death was of full age, to wit, 23 years and more. The said Richard Seyncler granted the premises, with the reversion of the third part of the manor which Sibyl mother of Robert aforesaid held and still holds in dower by assignment of the same Robert, to Richard de Lilleshull, parson of the church of Uffewell, and Robert de Wighthull, and the heirs of the same Richard forever, by virtue of which grant Sibyl and the other tenants of the manor attorned to the grantees; the king’s licence not having been obtained. The said grantees thereupon gave the said two-thirds, messuage and 40a. land, and granted the reversion of the third part of the manor, by a fine levied in the king’s court, to the aforesaid Richard Seyncler and Margaret his wife and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to one William de Bonevill and his heirs, the king’s licence not having been obtained. Afterwards the king by his charter pardoned all the trespasses committed therein. Margaret died at the Purification, 35 Edward III, at Barton, without issue by the said Richard. Richard died in 36 Edward III. Afterwards the aforesaid William sued out a writ of diem clausit extremum to the escheator, and by the inquisition it was found that the remainder was as stated above. So the messuage, 40a. land and two-thirds of the manor were delivered to him according to the tenor of the said fine, and he has been in possession thereof and received the profits from the death of Richard Seyncler until his day. The said Sibyl, tenant of the third part of the manor, survives and receives the profits thereof.

245.	RICHARD SON AND HEIR OF JOHN SAYER.
	Writ of devenerunt, 12 May, 42 Edward III.
ESSEX.	Inq. (indented) taken at Maldon, Monday the feast of St. Denis, 42 Edward III.
	The said Richard, who died while a minor in the king’s wardship, held the following in his demesne as of fee:— Lachindon. 50a. land, 30a. marsh and 2a. pasture, held of the king, as of the honor of Hagenet, by service of 10s. to be paid yearly at Dover Castle; a messuage and 60a. arable, held of the prior of Holy Trinity, Canterbury, by service of 8s. and one ploughshare, price 6d., and one boonwork (precaria) yearly; and 7a. marsh, held of the abbess of Berkyngge by service of 1/2d. yearly. The said lands &c. are charged to Sir Richard de Haveryngge, knight, with a rent of 4l. to be paid yearly to him and his heirs for ever, which rent Richard and his ancestors have had time out of mind, by what title the jurors know not. Copford, Briche Magna and Briche Parva. A messuage, 72a. arable, 5a. pasture and 2a. wood, held of Robert de Teye and other lords of the fee, by what services the jurors know not. Briche Magna. 25a. arable, held of John Gernoun, knight, by what services the jurors know not. All the premises came into the king’s hand by the death of John Sayer, and so into the hand of Richard de Haveryngg, knight, by grant of the king. Richard died about Christmas, 35 Edward III. John Sayer, his brother, is his heir, and was 21 years of age at Christmas last. The said John Sayer is not married.

246.	JOHN TANNERE, SON OF ROGER ALBON, of london.
	Writ of certiorari to the mayor of London touching the date of birth and death of the said John, and the name and age of his heir. 12 November, 42 Edward III.
LONDON.	Inq. taken before the mayor, 20 November, 42 Edward III.
	The said John Tannere was born and baptised in the church of St. Sepulchre without Neugate on the Commemoration of Souls, 21 Edward III. He died on Thursday after the Assumption, 42 Edward III. Walter Elys, brother of John Elys father of Joan his mother, is his heir, and is aged 60 years and more.

247.	ALICE LATE THE WIFE OF JOHN WALDEN.
	Writ to the mayor of London to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Alice, one of the heirs of Roger Wallok, ‘upholder,’ and who has been in possession of her lands since her death and received the issues. 6 November, 42 Edward III.
LONDON.	Inq. taken before the mayor, 8 November, 42 Edward III.
	She died on 9 September, 42 Edward III, seised of:— Parish of St. Mary of Wollecherchehawe. 5 shops with 4 solars built over. John de Walden, who was her husband, has been in possession of the premises since her death and receives the issues as tenant by the courtesy of England. The premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London. She died without heir begotten of her within the realm of England; but she had a son named Thomas lawfully begotten in parts beyond seas, to wit, in Brittany, who dwells there and is 3 years old, as is said, but whether it be true or not the jurors know not. If Thomas is not her heir for the cause aforesaid, then Juliana her sister, daughter and one of the heirs of Roger Wallok aforesaid, aged 26 years and more, is her heir.

NORTHUMBERLAND.	Inq. taken at Alnewyk, Friday after St. Peter’s Chains, 42 Edward III.
	Newton by the Sea. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Hibburn. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Yerdill. 3 husband-lands and 6a. land and meadow in the hands of tenants at will rendering 20s. yearly, 2 carucates and 36a. waste land and meadow, and 4 waste cottages. The 2 carucates and 36a. are held of the baron of Werk in socage by service of a rose at Midsummer. Dicheburn. 8 husband-lands, of which 4 are in the hands of tenants at will rendering 16s. yearly and 4 are waste. They are held of the lord de Bello Monte in socage by service of a rose at Midsummer. Alnewyk. A cottage rendering 12d. yearly, held of Sir Henry de Percy by knight’s service. Ellington. A messuage and 18a. land in the hands of tenants at will rendering 6s. yearly, held in socage of the lord de Welles by service of rendering 1lb. of pepper at Christmas. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on Friday before St. James the Apostle, 41 Edward III Robert Wendout, his son, aged 7 years and more, is his heir.

249.	SIMON VERNEYE, KINSMAN AND HEIR OF THOMAS DE LANGELEY.
	Writ of devenerunt, 1 May, 42 Edward III.
OXFORD.	Inq. (indented) made at Chepyngnorton, 6 June, 42 Edward III.
	The said Simon, who died a minor in the king’s wardship, held the following of the inheritance of the said Thomas:— Wycchewode. The bailiwick of the keepership of the forest, held of the king in chief by rendering 7l. yearly by the hands of the sheriff; and 60a. assarted land within the bounds of the forest, which belong to the said keepership, held of the king in chief by rendering 15s. yearly by the hands of the sheriff. He died in the king’s wardship on 1 October, 41 Edward III. William de Verneye, his brother, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.
	Writ of plenius certiorari to enquire touching a report that the aforesaid bailiwick and assart are held in chief by knight’s service, and that Simon died before he had sued them out of the king’s hand. Wyndesore, 10 July, 42 Edward III.
OXFORD.	Inq. made at Cherlebury, 21 October, 42 Edward III.
	The bailiwick and assart are not held of the king in chief by knight’s service, but as above. The said Simon, long before (sic) he sued the premises out of the king’s hand after the death of Thomas and had obtained seisin thereof, was surviving. Roger de Embrugg has been in possession of the custody of the bailiwick since the death of Thomas, by what title the jurors know not. John Giffard and Alice his wife have received the issues of the 60a. assart since the death of Thomas, Alice having been enfeoffed thereof jointly with the said Thomas, her late husband, with the king’s licence, the reversion belonging to the heirs of Thomas.

NORTHUMBERLAND.	Inq. taken at Newcastle upon Tyne, Tuesday after (?) St. Mary Magdalene, 42 Edward III.
	Ovyngeham. The town (extent given), held in dower after the death of her said former husband, by the king’s assignment, of the inheritance of Gilbert de Umframville, earl of Angus, son and heir of Robert, with the advowson of the church of Ovyngham. Rouchastre. 26s. 8d. yearly rent from the town, held in dower. All the premises are held of the king in chief. Shirmondene. A messuage, 5 carucates of land, 20a. meadow, 50a. wood and a watermill in the hands of tenants at will rendering 10 marks yearly, held in dower. Alwynton. 5 messuages, 5 husband-lands and a cottage in the hands of tenants at will rendering 22s. yearly, held in dower of Henry de Percy, as of the manor of Alnewyk by knight’s service. Redesdale. A pasture called ‘Erlessid,’ held in dower. Akensid. 20a. wood so called, held in dower. Ellesden. 4 messuages and 4 bovates of land at ‘le W …. de’ by Ellesden, in the hands of tenants at will rendering 40s. yearly, held in dower. Kynghop. 100a. wood so called, held in dower. Wodburne Parva. 2 messuages and 2 bovates of land in the hands of tenants at will rendering 10s. yearly. Wolrig by Herbotill. A messuage and a bovate of land, held in dower. Redesd’. A pasture called ‘Fulhop,’ held in dower. Grenesonheseles. A plot of land so called, held in dower. Redesd’. Two-thirds of the pasture ‘del Smalburne,’ and a free yearly rent of 10s. and 1lb. pepper from Ladiland in Hatherwyk. Ellesden. A free rent of 5s. from lands &c. formerly belonging to Gilbert de Kayrewyk, and a free rent of 2s. from lands formerly belonging to Nicholas Don, held in dower. Lynsheles. A free rent of 13d. from lands formerly belonging to Thomas Shert, held in dower. The lands &c. aforesaid are held of the king in chief by knight’s service. She held no other lands &c. in the county, in dower or otherwise. She died on Friday the last day of March last. Gilbert de Umframvill, earl of Angos, is son and heir of Robert aforesaid, and is 50 years of age and more, and the premises ought to revert to him after the death of Eleanor.

LINCOLN.	Inq. (indented) taken at Boston, Thursday after Corpus Christi, 42 Edward III.
	Boston. A ruined messuage and 111s. 6d. yearly rent from various tenements, held of the king in chief, (fn. 1) services not known, as her dower of the tenements formerly belonging to Thomas Kayly, knight, sometime her husband, with reversion to John son of Constantine de Clyfton, kinsman and heir of Adam de Clyfton, a minor in the king’s wardship. Perquisites of court there are worth 13s. 4d. yearly. She died on Palm Sunday, 42 Edward III. Heir not known.
	Writ, 4 April, 42 Edward III.
NORFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Hilbirworth, Friday in Easter week, 42 Edward III.
	Hilbirworth. A third part of the manor, with the advowson of the church, held by way of dower of the inheritance of Adam de Clifton, knight. Robert de Ufford and Margaret, long before her death, granted to the said Adam and Eleanor his wife the aforesaid third part of the manor, except the said advowson, for the whole of Margaret’s life, by a charter indented dated at Hilbirworth, Monday after Michaelmas, 18 Edward III. Afterwards, Adam de Clifton by charter enfeoffed Roger Grey, Adam son of the aforesaid Adam, Richard Holdych, William de Keteryngham, clerk, and John de Cressigham of the same, and the said feoffees have ever since been in possession of the said third part, (except the advowson, of which Margaret died seised), and are still in possession. The manor is held of the earl of Arundel by knight’s service.
NORFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Babynglee, Thursday in Easter week, 42 Edward III.
	Babynglee. The manor (extent given), held jointly with Thomas de Cailly, knight, her first husband, deceased, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Thomas. The manor is held of the king in chief, as parcel of the barony of Tatishale, by knight’s service. The extent includes a sixteenth part of the ‘tolboth’ of Lenne, worth 40s. yearly. She died without heirs of the bodies of herself and the said Thomas on Palm Sunday last. John son of Constantine de Clefton, knight, son of Adam son of Margery, aunt of the said Thomas, aged 15 years and more, is kinsman and heir of Thomas.
NORFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Wymu[n]dham, 10 April, 42 Edward III.
	Grishawe in Wymundham. Two-thirds of the manor (extent given), held jointly with Thomas de Cailly, knight, as above, of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of Tatishale, service not known. The extent includes two-thirds of a park with deer, a fishery in a stew, of which two-thirds are worth 2s. yearly, two-thirds of a market, the toll of which is worth 2s. yearly, and a leet held at St. Peter’s Chains, the profit of two-thirds of which is 26s. 8d. yearly. 	Aschby la Zouche. 8 messuages and 8 virgates of land, held of the king in chief in service by knight’s service, and a close called ‘Hasulclos’ within the park of Aschby. Aschby la Zouche. The manor (extent given), held of Henry Beaumount, knight, by knight’s service. The extent includes an enclosed park containing 60a. He died in parts beyond seas on Saturday after St. Matthew the Apostle last. Robert la Zouche, aged 53 years, is his heir.

CAMBRIDGE.	Inq. (indented) taken at Swaveseye, Saturday the feast of SS. Simon and Jude, 42 Edward III.
	Swaveseye. The manor (extent given), held of the earl of Rychymound by service of a pair of gilt spurs, price 6d. The extent includes various fisheries let at farm for 40s. yearly. Swaveseye. The advowson of the church of the priory, and the advowson of a chantry belonging to the manor. He died on Thursday after St. Bartholomew, 42 Edward III. Robert le Zouche, aged 50 years and more, is his uncle and heir.

254.	WILLIAM SON AND HEIR OF WILLIAM DE CRIKTOTE, knight.
	Writ to the escheator in Suffolk to take proof of the age of the said heir, the lands of whose inheritance are in the custody of Joan late the wife of the said William Criktote by demise of Reynold de Cobham, to whom the king committed the same. The said heir is said to have been born at Asshefeld and baptised in the church there. 26 October, 42 Edward III.
	Endorsed: The said Joan was warned to be present at the proof of age, and had nothing to say against it.

255.	JOHN SAYER, BROTHER AND HEIR OF RICHARD SAYER.
	Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said John, the lands of whose inheritance are in the custody of Richard de Haveryng. 4 November, 42 Edward III.
	Endorsed: The escheator warned Richard to be present, and he had nothing to say against the proof of age.
ESSEX.	Proof of age made at Colcestre, Saturday before St. Edmund the King, 42 Edward III.
	Henry Neuard, aged 64 years, says that the said John was born at Coppeford and baptised in the font of the church of St. Mary there on Wednesday the feast of All Saints, 21 Edward III, and was 21 years of age on Wednesday the feast of All Saints last. This the deponent knows because about Michaelmas before the birth he married Katharine his wife. Robert Boloigne, aged 48 years, agrees and says that about Christmas after the birth he was robbed by thieves of 10l at the wood of Illeford. Robert atte Holte, aged 59 years, agrees and says that about the feast of St. Martin before the birth, as he went on his ship, he fell over some casks (sicut perexit (sic) in navi suo cecidit super dolios) and broke an arm. Stephen Richer, aged 43 years, agrees and says that about St. Andrew’s day after the birth his father killed (mactabatur) his mother. John Dygon, aged 39 years, agrees and says that about the Nativity of the Virgin Mary before the birth his barn at le Welde full of corn was accidentally burnt down. Richard Noth, aged 49 years, agrees and says that about Michaelmas before the birth, as he crossed by Fambreggeferye, his horse leapt out of the boat into the sea, and hardly escaped on account of the storm. John Sumpter, aged 37 years, agrees and says that about the feast of St. Laurence before the birth, as he went with a cart in autumn, he killed (mact’) John his servant with a fork. John de Briche, aged 48 years, agrees and says that about the feast of St. Peter’s Chains before the birth he purchased his manor of Haselound. Henry Ive, aged 69 years, agrees and says that about the feast of All Saints ……… [Remainder torn away.]

256.	FRANCIS SON AND HEIR OF JOHN DE ENEFELD.
	Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Francis, the lands of whose inheritance are in the custody of John Wroth, citizen of London. 28 November, 42 Edward III.
MIDDLESEX.	Proof of age (indented) made 30 November, 42 Edward III.
	Roger Darneford, aged 50 years and more, says that the said Francis was 21 years of age on the feast of St. Mark last, and was born at Enefeld and baptised in the church of St. Andrew there. Roger de Louth, knight, William atte Pantre and Agnes Duraunt lifted him from the sacred font. This the deponent knows because he was John de Enefeld’s chamberlain at the time of the birth. John Goldyng, the elder, aged 60 years, Peter Mordeamour, aged 56 years, John Brok and William Wheler of Enefeld, aged 52 years, agree and say they know this because the first pestilence happened in those parts in the second year after the birth. John Tebaude, aged 56 years and more, agrees and says that on Sunday before Michaelmas in the year following the birth he married Isabel his wife. Richard Cok of Enefeld, aged 50 years and more, John Somerry of Enefeld, aged 53 years and more, William Reynald, aged 53 years and more, and Richard Colnay of Enefeld agree and say that Humphrey de Bohom, lord of the town of Enefeld, stayed there at the time of the birth, and on the feast of St. Andrew then next following departed therefrom and never returned. John Curteys of Enefeld, aged 60 years and more, and William Marneham, aged 51 years, agree and say that John Wroth, the elder, married Margaret, mother of the said Francis, on Sunday before the Purification in the third year after the birth.

257.	RALPH SON AND HEIR OF WILLIAM HOBKYN of Northgeveldale.
	Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Ralph, the lands of whose inheritance are in the king’s custody. 14 February, 42 Edward III.
YORK.	Proof of age taken in York castle, Thursday in the second week of Lent, 42 Edward III.
	Thomas Wascelyn, aged 40 years, says that the said Ralph was born at Northgeveldale on Monday after St. Martin in the winter, 20 Edward III, and was baptised in the church there, and that Nicholas de Wilton, then parson of the church, and John de Wynteryngton lifted him from the sacred font. He was 21 years of age on Monday after St. Martin last. This the deponent knows because he was in the church and saw the baptism. Thomas de Foxholes, aged 38 years, agrees and says that he was at Northgeveldale when William Hobkyn died, which was 21 years and more ago. William Mareschall, aged 43 years, agrees and says that in the same month that Ralph was born he had a son William born, who is now 21 years of age and more. Walter de Wresill, aged 44 years, agrees and says that in the same week that Ralph was born he married Agnes his wife. Robert Croke, aged 38 years, agrees and says that in the same month that Ralph was born he had a daughter Joan born, who died lately. William Coke, aged 40 years, agrees and says that in the same week that Ralph was born he had a son Philip born, who is 21 years of age and more. Richard Dreng, aged 46 years, agrees and says that in the same week that Ralph was born he was at Northgeveldale and spoke with Ralph’s mother and saw the birth. Robert de Kelk, aged 48 years, agrees and says that in the same month that Ralph was born he had a daughter Joan born, who is now 21 years of age and more. Roger Dautry, aged 38 years, agrees and says that in the same year he had a brother John buried. William de Holme, aged 48 years, agrees and says that in the same year he had a son John born, who is now 21 years of age and more. John de Wyuestowe, aged 47 years, agrees and says that in the same month that Ralph was born he had a daughter Elizabeth born, who is now 21 years of age and more. Robert Bonfair, aged 50 years, agrees and says that he was with Ralph’s mother at Northgeveldale when he was born.

	Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Thomas, the lands of whose inheritance are in the custody of Richard Beaulieu by the king’s commitment. 15 February, 42 Edward III.
	Endorsed: The escheator warned the said Richard by Patrick Gray and John de Knaresdale, and he was present at this proof but said nothing against it.
CUMBERLAND.	Proof of age taken at Carlisle, Saturday in the third week of Lent, 42 Edward III.
	William de Stapilton, aged 38 years, says that the said Thomas was born at Carlisle on Monday before the Assumption, 19 Edward III, and was baptised in the church of St. Cuthbert there, and that Thomas Malman and Thomas de Raughton lifted him from the sacred font. So he was 21 years of age on Monday before the Assumption last. This the deponent knows because he was in the church and saw the baptism. Giles de Orton, aged 50 years, agrees and says that on the same day he had a daughter born. John de Denton, aged 50 years, agrees and says that Richard his son was born on the following Friday. Roger de Salkeld, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that he married a woman the same day. Amand Mownsews, aged 40 years and more, agrees and says that his wife died on the following Saturday. Clement de Crofton, aged 41 years and more, agrees and says that the battle of Durham (bellum de Dunelmya) was on the feast of St. Lucy in the same year. William Besett, aged 45 years and more, agrees and says he took a Scot at the time of the battle of Durham, which battle was the same year. John de Thirllewall, aged 46 years and more, agrees and says that Richard his kinsman was born the same day. John de Dalston, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that Robert his son was born on the following Sunday. Hugh de Querton, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that he was in the church when Thomas was baptised. Adam de Aglyounby, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that his son was born the same day. John de Stapilton, aged 45 years and more, agrees and says that he had a sister born on the following Monday.
