Docker is a township of Grayrigg 4 m. N.E. of Kendal.

Monuments (1–7)

The following monuments, unless otherwise described, are of the 17th century and of two storeys. The walls are of rubble and the roofs are slate-covered. Some of the buildings have exposed ceiling-beams.

Condition—Good or fairly good.

^a(1). Docker Garths, house near the middle of the parish, was built probably late in the 17th or early in the 18th century.

^a(2). Tenter End, house, 220 yards S.E. of (1), has a later extension on the S. Inside the building is a three-stage cupboard of the local type, with projecting fascia and pendants.

^a(3). Docker Cottage on the N.E. edge of the parish.

^a(4). Hollins, house, 1,230 yards E.S.E. of (1), is of irregular plan with later additions on the S.W. The original chimney-stack has a cylindrical shaft. Inside the building is a small cupboard with the initials and date I.G.S. 1707; there is also a three-stage cupboard, of the local type, with projecting fascia and pendants. In the same room is an original muntin and plank partition. A small cupboard in the staircase-wall has a door with small turned spindle-bars. The staircase has a balustrade on the landing with plain slat balusters and one shaped baluster.

^b(5). Croft Foot, house, 1,170 yards S.W. of (4), has a later addition on the S. Inside the building is a three-stage cupboard of the local type, with projecting fascia and pendants, the former carved with the initials and date R. and A.I. 1689.

^b(6). Mires, house, 280 yards S. of (5), was built early in the 18th century. It contains a panelled partition and some other 18th-century fittings.

^b(7). Wray Farm, house, 370 yards W. of (5), was built probably early in the 18th century. It contains an original panelled partition and a fireplace and cupboards of the same period.
