STOW-ON-THE-WOLD
(18 miles N.E. of Cirencester)
It has been suggested (fn. 1) that an Iron Age hill-fort preceded the present hill-top town, the defences enclosing some 30 acres on the E. of the parish church. No certain remains have yet been found and the suggestion depends upon the oval pattern made by the old parish boundary on N. and E., where there is a steeply scarped edge to the spur, and by the line of streets on S. and W. The site may have been referred to as Meilgaresbyri in a charter of 714. (fn. 2)
(1) Roman Road, The Foss Way (SP 18992543), is represented by the agger, 30 ft. wide, up to 1½ ft. high and probably ditched on both sides, extending for 250 yds. in the cemetery S.W. of the town.
