EDITORIAL NOTE

This volume, the tenth and last of the Victoria History volumes covering Cambridgeshire, has been edited and almost entirely compiled and written by the central staff of the History.

Modern visitation returns in the Ely and Norwich diocesan records are cited by reference to the files containing returns for the year in question, and are to be taken to refer to those for the parish being treated, without further specifying its name. References in particular parishes to the archives of the various Cambridge colleges mentioned above are, unless otherwise specified, to the section of their archives concerned with their property in the parish whose history is being related. Similarly references by number to the List of Historic Buildings prepared for each parish in the 1980s by the Department of the Environment are to the buildings so numbered within the list covering that parish. References to the local and national Press from the 1950s are derived from the files of cuttings compiled and continuously kept up to date at the Cambridgeshire Collection.

The structure and aims of the Victoria County History as a whole are explained in the General Introduction published in 1970, and the Supplement to it issued in 1990. The names of places outside Cambridgeshire are identified by reference to the historic county in which they stood before the administrative changes in county boundaries of 1965 and later.
