	Northleye. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief at a fee-farm of 9l. yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff. He died on 11 June last. Margaret his sister, aged 22 years and more, wife of Roger atte Lee, is his next heir.

	Belchamp Otes. The manor, held of the king, as of the honor of Boulogne, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Belchamp William. 40s. yearly in the manor, which manor is held of the earl of Oxford by knight’s service. She died on Saturday the eve of St. Laurence last. Joan daughter of John son of the said John Buttourt, knight, whom Robert Swynbourn, knight, has taken to wife, is next heir of the said John Buttourt. She is 23 years of age and more.

SURREY.	Inq. taken at Tanrugg, Friday before Palm Sunday, 50 Edward III.
	Okstede. A messuage, 26a. arable and 1 1/2a. meadow, held of Sir Reynold de Cobham, knight, as of his manor of Okstede, by service of 1d. yearly. She died on Thursday after the Epiphany last. Margaret wife of Simon Diraunt, aged 25 years and more, is her kinswoman and next heir, to wit, daughter of John Wylot son of John Wylot brother of Stephen atte Bergh father of Alice her mother.

HUNTINGDON.	Inq. taken at Catteworth, 3 November, 50 Edward III.
	Catteworth. A manor (extent given) and the advowson of the church, held of the earl of Hereford by knight’s service and payment of 20s. yearly. The extent includes rents of assise of free tenants in Stowe, Tilbrok and Catteworth. He died in the octave of Michaelmas last. Thomas his son, a minor of whose age the jurors are not sure, is his heir.

LINCOLN.	Inq. taken at Bekeryng, Sunday after St. Luke, 50 Edward III.
	Bekeryng. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief. The rents and farms of Tiryngton and Erwyke, worth 40s. yearly, are held of the lord de Rosse by suit of court every three weeks, other services not known. He died on 1 October, 50 Edward III. Heir as above, aged 16 years.

NOTTINGHAM.	Inq. taken at Tuxforth, Thursday after All Saints, 50 Edward III.
	Tuxforth. A third part of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee. The heirs of William Deyncourt have 5 marks yearly of the rent thereof. Laxton. A messuage, 2 carucates of land, 12a. meadow and 11l. rent of assise, held of Adam de Everyngham of Laxton by service of 1/2d. yearly for all secular services. Laxtonmorehouse. Tenements worth 34s. yearly, held of Adam de Everyngham by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee; and 3a. [land], (fn. 1) held of the master of the Hospital of St. John by service of 18d. yearly. Allerton in Shirwod. A moiety of a watermill, unoccupied and of no value for want of repairs, and 10s. 6d. rent of assise, held of John Fitz William, knight, by knight’s service. Boughton. 3s. rent of assise, held of John Burdon by service of a rose yearly. He died at London on Sunday after Michaelmas last. Thomas his son, aged 15 years and more, is his heir.
	Writ, 7 December, 50 Edward III.
NORTHUMBERLAND.	Inq. (indented) taken at the castle of Newcastle upon Tyne, Monday before St. George, 51 Edward III.
	Harnam, Ayden, Bradeforth, Midelton, Lyghton, Denum, Hertwayton, Trewyk and Belshowe. By his charter indented dated at Belshowe on St. Mark’s day, 37 Edward III, he granted all his lands &c. in the above places to John de Stryvelyn, knight, and Jacoba his wife, their heirs and assigns, at a rent of a rose yearly for the first 4 years and 16l. yearly for the 11 years following; and as for certain lands &c. in Bolom, he demised them on the same day to the said John and Jacoba for 15 years at a rent of a rose yearly for the first 4 years and 4l. yearly for the 11 years following. If they held the said lands &c. longer, then they were to render for them 100l. yearly. By his writing indented dated on Saturday after St. Katharine, 47 Edward III, he confirmed the premises to the said John and Joan, their heirs and assigns, together with rents, services, wardships and reliefs, as well as all other his lands &c. in the county, discharged of all the rents aforesaid, until he or his heirs should pay them 500 marks. No part of the said sum was paid at the date of this inquisition, so that he died seised of no lands &c. in the county. Heir not known, because he neither dwelt nor died within the county.

	Writ of devenerunt, 1 February, 50 Edward III.
WILTS.	Inq. (indented) taken at Salisbury, 6 February, 50 Edward III.
	Wyntreslowe. 20l. rent, held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee, came to the king’s hands by the death of John de Bensted and by reason of the minority of John his son and heir. Edward brother of the said John son of John is his next heir, and was 21 years of age on the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul last.
SOUTHAMPTON.	Inq. (indented) taken at Bensted, 9 February, 50 Edward III. Bensted. A messuage, 87a. arable, 1 1/2a. meadow, 10a. pasture, 1 1/2a. wood and 7s. rent, held in socage of the heir of John de Popham, as of his manor of Popham, by service of 40s. yearly, came to the king’s hands, as above.

	Chevele. A manor, held of [the manor] formerly of Nicholas de Loveyn there by knight’s service, service of 21s. rent yearly, and suit of court to Nicholas’s said manor every three weeks. Ditton Cammoys. 82a. land, held of the manor formerly of the same Nicholas there by service of 5s. 4d. yearly and suit of court every three weeks. Ditton Valeys. A toft, 57a. land, 2a. pasture, 6a. wood and 12s. 10d. rent, held of Henry Englissh by knight’s service and service of 3s. 2d. yearly. Kertelyng. 14a. land and 2a. meadow, held of the earl of Warrewyk by service of 2s. yearly. Asshele, Silvirle, Saxton and Chevele. A toft, 77[a.] land and 5s. 6d. rent, held of divers lords, to wit, the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, Aubrey de Veer, Margaret Sibill, John Baiolf and John Colman, by knight’s service. All the premises came to the king’s hands as above. John son of John died in 33 Edward III, day not known. Heir as above. Footnote: Born at Benyngton, co. Hertford, and baptized in the church there.

	Welcomstowe. A tenement called ‘Hegham,’ held of the king in chief, as parcel of the manor of Benyngton, by knight’s service; a tenement called ‘Benstedes,’ held of the abbot of Waltham Holy Cross by service of 5s. yearly, and the residue of the same tenement held of the earl of Warewik by service of 8s. yearly. Little Perndon. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the king as above, and also of other lords, services not known. Great Stanbrugg. Two-thirds of the manor, the whole of which is held of the king, as of the honor of Reylegh, by knight’s service. Raureth. Two-thirds of 5a. meadow, held of the manor of Raureth by service of 6d. yearly. All the premises came to the king’s hands as above. Heir as above.
HERTFORD.	Inq. taken at Hertford, 28 February, 50 Edward III.
	Benyngton. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee. Park Street (villa de Parco Soka). The manor of Harpesfeld therein, held of the abbot of St. Albans in socage by service of 15s. yearly and suit to the abbot’s court every three weeks. Bishop’s Hatfeld. A tenement called ‘Cheweles,’ held of the bishop of Ely by homage and fealty and service of 3s. yearly, and the residue of the same tenement held of Nicholas Fitz Symond by homage and fealty and service of 2s. yearly. All the premises came to the king’s hands as above. Heir as above.

	Writ of precipimus, Rokyngham, 1 September, 49 Edward III.
SURREY.	Inq. (indented) taken at Westhorslee, Monday after the Translation of St. Edward, 49 Edward III.
	Westhorslee. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the king, as of the castle of Wyndesores, by service of one knight’s fee, and by service of rendering 6s. 8d. yearly to the said castle for ward thereof and doing suit to the king’s hundred of Hameshacch called ‘Wokkynggehundred’ every three weeks, to wit, by 5 of his bondmen, or in their default in his own person, and by rendering 1/2lb. cummin at Easter to the hens of Hugh de Wyndesores, as appears by a charter of the said Hugh. Long before his death he enfeoffed thereof, without the king’s licence, Hugh Badewe, knight, William de Sancto Omero, Thomas de Weston and Richard Hertwell, parson of Westhorsle, on condition that they should re-enfeoff him and his heirs thereof. The said feoffees had possession of the manor for seven years after his death, by what title the jurors know not; and ever since then John de Kyngesfolde has had possession, by what title the jurors know not. He died on 25 August, 35 Edward III. James Berners, his son, aged 14 years and more, is his heir.
SURREY.	Inq. (indented) taken virtute officii at Kyngeston, 30 October, 49 Edward III.
	Westhorsle. The manor &c., held as above and alienated as above. After the alienation he entered on the manor and died seised thereof.

MIDDLESEX.	Inq. (indented) taken at Westminster, Tuesday after St. Katharine, 49 Edward III.
	Iseldon. The manor of Berners, held of the bishop of London in chief, as of his castle of Stortford, by service of 10s. yearly for ward of the said castle, attendance every three weeks at the bishop’s court at the said castle, and a rent of 5s. yearly to the bishop’s manor called Stebenhyth. Date of death and heir as above. John Chichestre, citizen and alderman of London, had possession of the manor for eight years after his death, by what title the jurors know not; and ever since then John de Kyngesfold has had possession, by what title the jurors know not.

ESSEX.	Inq. (indented) taken at Donmowe, Saturday after St. Andrew, 49 Edward III.
	Berneston. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the earl of Hereford in chief by knight’s service. Berneresrothyng. The manor, held of the same earl by knight’s service. Beaumond. The manor of Berneres Beaumond, held of the earl of Oxford by service of 2s. yearly. High Estre. A messuage and 60a. land called ‘Creppyngges,’ held in chief of the earl of Hereford by knight’s service. Leaden Rothyng (Rothyng Plumba). 12a. land and 2a. wood, held of Thomas de [Hareford], (fn. 2) service not known. He died on Thursday before the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 35 Edward III. Heir as above, aged 17 years at Easter last. Since his death John de Glidesburgh has had possession of the manors of Berneston and Berneresrothyng, (fn. 3) John Kyngesfold receiving the issues by his hands; Thomas de Veer, earl of Oxford, and his executors, have had possession of the manor of Beaumond; Thomas de Walmesford, clerk, has had possession of the premises in High Estre; and Thomas de Rochford has had possession of the premises in Leaden Rothyng.
	Writ to the escheator to make inquisition touching the lands &c. held of the said John by knight’s service or otherwise, and the wardships, marriages, reliefs, escheats and other profits belonging to him which have been concealed and withdrawn from the king since his death. 30 November, 49 Edward III.
ESSEX.	Inq. (indented) taken at Donmowe, Thursday before St. Thomas the Apostle, 49 Edward III.
	Donmowe. Avice late the wife of Stephen Caumbregg held for life of the said John Berners, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee, a messuage and 140a. land, meadow, pasture and wood in Donmowe, and died after her husband on Thursday after Michaelmas, 35 Edward III. After her death John Caumbregg, son and heir of the said Stephen and Avice, a minor, was seized into the wardship of Humphrey de Bohun, uncle of the last Humphrey de Bohun, late earl of Hereford, by Thomas de Walmesford, clerk, and the other executors of the said Humphrey the uncle, names not known; and the said executors took the issues of the premises until the said heir’s full age, to wit, for two years, to the value of 20 marks, and also had his marriage to the value of 20 marks. This they did because John Berners held lands etc. in the county of the said Humphrey the uncle. Berneston. The church, the gift of which belongs to the heirs of the said John Berners, lately fell void, and Joan countess of Hereford presented thereto a clerk of hers, name not known, who was inducted and instituted, by what title the jurors know not.

	Writ to take without delay the inquisition lately commanded. 13 July, 50 Edward III.
SUFFOLK.	Inq. (indented) taken at Henhowe, Friday the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 50 Edward III.
	Hikelyngham. A manor called ‘Berners Halle,’ held of Edward prince of Wales and the lady Joan his wife, in her right, by knight’s service, as of the manor of Lammersh, co. Essex. He died about (citra for circa) the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 35 Edward III. Heir as above, now aged 16 years and more. For five years after his death the prince had possession of the manor by reason of the minority of the heir, and then sold the custody thereof during such minority to John Carleton for 100l. John Carleton had possession of the manor for two years and then died. Ever since his death John Hestynges and Joan his wife have had possession, but how or by what title the jurors know not.

247.	JOHN DE COGAN.
	Writ of precipimus, 11 August, 50 Edward III.
GLOUCESTER AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES.	Inq. taken at Kerdyf, Tuesday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 50 Edward III.
	Cogan. Two knights’ fees, held by knight’s service of Eleanor la Despenser, mother of Hugh la Despenser who was uncle of Sir Edward le Despenser. He died during the reign of the present king and in the lifetime of Eleanor, day and year not known because he died in Ireland. Since his death the said fees have been in the possession of the said Eleanor, Hugh le Despenser her son and heir, and the said Edward, Hugh’s kinsman and heir, by reason of the minority of divers heirs of the said John. Geoffrey de Cogan, aged 40 years and more, is John’s kinsman and next heir.

	Writ of precipimus, 22 June, 50 Edward III.
KENT.	Inq. taken at Berham, Tuesday after St. Benedict, 50 Edward III.
	Alvynton. A manor so called (extent given), held of the lord de Say by homage and fealty and a rent of a sparrow-hawk. The extent includes 70a. arable in a field lying between Schiteport and Alvyngton. He also held 60a. land of gavelkind tenure of the abbot of St. Augustine, Canterbury, by service of 19s. yearly, and 21a. land of gavelkind tenure of John de Canteys, as of his manor of Shrympelinge, by service of 7s. yearly, and 39a. 3r. land of gavelkind tenure of the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, by service of rendering 18d. and 1 1/2 bushels of palm-barley. He died 27 years and more ago. Isabel his wife is said to have held all the premises jointly with him and his heirs. She died on Sunday before the Annunciation, 49 Edward III. Since her death no one has had possession of the land because of dissensions between the heirs. Constance wife of William Yok and Alice wife of Thomas White are Peter’s next heirs at common law, being daughters of John his son. The said Constance and Alice, together with Laurence his son, are his next heirs in gavelkind. All the heirs are of full age.

249.	JOHN CUTHBERD.
	Writ of mandamus, 20 June, 50 Edward III.
WESTMORELAND.	Inq. taken at Appelby, Thursday after the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, 50 Edward III.
	Burgham. A moiety of a messuage and of 3 bovates and 16a. land, and a moiety of a third part of a mill, held of Roger de Clifford by service of rendering 3s. for cornage, 2s. in money and 3 quarters and 3 bushels of oats for puture of Roger’s foresters of Whynfell, and 10d. for puture of Roger’s bailiffs in the county. The said moieties are worth 6s. 8d. yearly. He died on Friday after St. Nicholas, 23 Edward III. John de Tyndale, aged 60 years and more, is his kinsman and heir, to wit, son of his sister Alice, and was married long before his death to Alice daughter of Richard de la Fell. Since his death the escheators for the time being have received the said rent of 6s. 8d (i.e. the value of the premises) to the king’s use.

SALOP.	Inq. (indented) taken at Bruggenorth, 12 November, 50 Edward III.
	Wyrketon and Walkeslowe. Two-thirds of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of rendering 6s. yearly by the hands of the sheriff. The extent includes a fulling-mill. Byllyngesleye. Two-thirds of the manor (extent given), held of the abbot of Clunye, service not known. Myllynghope. Two-thirds of the manor (extent given), with its members Possethorne, Hungerford and Thonglond, held of the prior of Wenlok by service of rendering 30s. yearly. She died on 14 October last. Agnes wife of John atte Morhalle, aged 50 years and more, is her aunt and next heir.
STAFFORD.	Inq. (indented) taken at Wolvernehampton, 14 November, 50 Edward III.
	Longenore. 40s. rent of assise of bond tenants, held of the earl of Stafford by knight’s service. Date of death and heir as above.

251.	DENISE LATE THE WIFE OF HUGH COKESHEYE.
	Writ, 18 February, 50 Edward III.
SALOP.	Inq. taken at Bruggenorth, 3 March, 50 Edward III.
	Shrewsbury. A burgage tenement in the street called ‘Doggepol,’ held of the king in chief as a free burgage of Shrewsbury. Franketon. 6 ruinous cottages, 40a. land, 12a. wood, 10a. marsh and 25s. rent of assise of free tenants, held of the earl of Arundel by fealty, as of his castle and manor of Isabelles Castel. Edward le Botiller held the premises in his demesne as of fee, and died on 4 September last. His heirs were (1) the said Denise his sister, (2) Elizabeth daughter of John son of John Lestraunge of Blakemere son of Ankaret, his second sister, aged 2 years and more and in the king’s wardship, (3) Margaret wife of Fulk de Penbrugge, knight, daughter of Ida his third sister, aged 24 years and more, and (4) Nicholas son of Nicholas de Longeford, knight, son of Alice his fourth sister, aged 28 years and more. The premises were taken into the king’s hand by reason of the minority of the aforesaid Elizabeth. Denise survived the said Edward, and was 50 years of age and more on 6 February last, the day of her death. She had not then obtained out of the kind’s hands her share of the premises, but died seised of such estate in a fourth part thereof. Walter de Cokeseye, knight, her son, aged 30 years and more, is her heir. Note at head of membrane: Videatur billa annexa et non fiat liberacio quousque etc. Bill (undated). William le Botiller of Wemme took a wife and had issue by her a certain William, and the wife died. Of that [wife] (fn. 4) there was issue another William, who had issue Elizabeth wife of Robert le Ferrers, knight. The first-named William took another wife named Ela; and then Joan who was the daughter of Richard de Franketon gave all the lands in Franketon whereof Edward le Botiller died seised to the said William and Ela and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of William; and Richard Borrey of Shrewsbury made a gift to them in like terms of the burgage tenement in Shrewsbury whereof the said Edward died seised. William and Ela had issue William, Edmund, Edward, Ankaretta, Ida, Alice and Denise, and died seised of the said tenements. Edmund entered thereon as their son and heir male, his brother William being dead without heir male of his body, and died seised thereof without heir male of his body. Edward entered as his brother and heir, and died seised thereof without heir male of his body. Thereupon Robert le Ferrers and Elizabeth his wife entered on the premises in right of the latter as right heir in remainder to the first William (the first William and Ela his wife being dead without heirs male of their bodies), and were seised thereof until ousted by the escheator by virtue of an office taken on the death of Edward.

WORCESTER.	Inq. taken at Kydermustre, Friday in the first week of Lent, 50 Edward III.
	Kydermustre. The manor (extent given), held for life of the king in chief by knight’s service by grant of Robert Martyn of Yevelton and Margaret his wife, the reversion belonging to Walter de Romeseye, knight, Margaret’s heir, by the king’s charter of licence required in such cases. The extent includes rents of free tenants of the borough of Kydermustre, of foreign free tenants, and of customary tenants; and tolls of a fair and market. Kaldewelle. The manor, held for life jointly with the said Hugh, her late husband, of the prior of Bradeleye in chief by service of socage, the reversion belonging to Walter de Cokeseye, knight, their son and heir. Wytteleye. The manor, held for life in dower of the said Walter de Cokeseye, who held it of the earl of Warrewych in chief by knight’s service. Cokeseye. The manor, held of the earl of Warrewych in chief by knight’s service. Orleton. The manor, held of Katharine late the wife of John Musard, knight, by service of socage, to wit, by rendering a sparrowhawk at St. Peter’s Chains or 12d. Opthrop and Aldermaston. A carucate of land and 60s. rent, held of the abbot of Pershore by service of rendering 16s. yearly. Tymberhangle. The manor, held of Edmund earl of March by service of rendering 13s. 4d. yearly. Wych. A brine boilery of 7 leads (bulleria septem plumborum aque salse), held of Edward prince of Wales in right of his wife, the countess of Kent, by service of socage. Overton by Stanforde. 60s. rent, held of Brian de Cornubia by knight’s service. Purshull, Wynterfold, Elmbrugge and Sallewurp. 2 messuages and a carucate of land, held of the earl of Warrewyck by service of socage. The last seven items she held for life jointly with the said Hugh, her late husband, the reversion belonging to Walter de Cokeseye, knight, their son and heir. She died on 4 February last. WORCESTER.	Inq. taken at Kydermynstre, Friday in the second week of Lent, 50 Edward III.
	Kydermynstre. The manor (extent given), held for life of the king in chief by knight’s service by grant of Robert Martyn of Yeveltone and Margaret his wife to her and the said Hugh, her late husband, now deceased, with successive remainders after their deaths to William son of the said Robert and Margaret and the heirs of his body, to Robert brother of the said William and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of Margaret. The said William and Robert his brother are dead without heirs of their bodies. Margaret, also, is dead, and Walter de Romeseye, knight, aged 40 years and more, is her son and heir. Caldewelle. The manor, held for life of the prior of Bradeleye by service of 18d. yearly, by grant of Sir Richard de Bromhulle, parson of the church of Chaddesleye, and Sir John atte Doune, vicar of the church of Kydermynstre, to her and the said Hugh, her late husband, and the heirs of Hugh. Hugh died long before she did, and Walter de Cokeseye, knight, is his son and heir. Cokeseye. The manor, held for life of the earl of Warrewyk by knight’s service, by grant as above (Caldewelle manor). Orltone. 	Depforde. A forge, held of the king in chief at a yearly rent of 6d. by grant of the king’s father, but whether the grant was in fee simple or in fee tail or for life the jurors know not. Date of death and heir not known. Since his death the forge has been successively in the possession of Laurence his son for 20 years, William son of the latter for 10 years, Ralph Bardevyle for 4 years, and William de Say, lord of the town, for a year and more, to wit, until all the lands of the said lord de Say came into the king’s hands by reason of the minority of John his son and heir.

DERBY.	Inq. (indented) taken at Derby, Friday before St. Margaret, 50 Edward III.
	Okebrok. The manor (extent given), except certain rents, services and knights’ fees in Ambaston and Thurleston, held jointly with Avena his wife, for their lives, by gift of Nicholas atte Welde, parson of Derley, and others, the reversion belonging to the right heirs of Godfrey. It is held of the king in chief by knight’s service Derley. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held for life by the said Godfrey and Avena and Richard their son by gift of William atte Wode, with reversion to the right heirs of Godfrey. The manor is held of John duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of the castle of High Peak, by knight’s service. He died on Thursday after Ascension day, 50 Edward III. Godfrey Foljambe, son of Godfrey his son, aged 9 years, is his heir.

	Picworthe. The manor, and a messuage in Ocham, held of the king in chief, as of his castle of Ocham, service not known. In 32 Edward III he divested himself thereof in favour of John le Groos, knight, and Hugh Fastolf, still living, and their heirs and assigns, and all the tenants attorned accordingly. He died on Sunday after St. Mark the Evangelist last. John Gyney his son, aged 18 years and more, is his heir.
