Pray make a remembrance of the receipt of these books. We have more of your books. The "pilche that I bought of you" I left with Friar John to mend. Pray let it be trussed in the bag your stuff is in; and if the bonnets whereof I spoke to the proctor are ready, give him 9s. and put them with the pilche, "and also the new compilations if ye have received them." You may give the carrier, Thomas at Wode, a penny or twain that he may the gladlier come to you, but no more, "for I have paid for the carriage." 	From Andrea Badoer, London, 8 June.—Christopher Frizer (Fisher) has come from the Pope and presented the Rose. Knew him at Venice; and he does a good office with the King. Mons. di San Zuanne has not left for France. The two ambassadors of the Emperor who were to come to the King of England have not come. The Queen has had a miscarriage, to the general grief. Fanno nuovi pensieri. Christopher says that the bp. of York is French. The King says that in the peace with France is an article that, after obtaining his own, France shall not further molest the Signory. From Flanders or the Emperor is no sound of war. The priest (fn. 1) of the King of Scotland has returned.

21 June. Adv. MS., 303.	504. JAMES IV. to EMMANUEL, KING OF PORTUGAL.
	Received on the 12 June (prid. idus) by Edward Ferdinandi his letters of the xiv. kal. Oct., 1509. With regard to the letters of reprisal and capture of some Portuguese vessels, he ought to remember that the dispute is an old one (supra œtatem stetisse)—that injury was done to the Scots, not by a single ship but by the whole Portuguese fleet, and that sentence had been given in accordance with this view by the Senate of Burgundy. Restitution had been repeatedly demanded in vain, and the King had suspended last year the reprisals granted by James III. in hope of an amicable settlement. Moved by the complaints of his subjects, he sent a herald to his Majesty, but could obtain no satisfaction. At last they were induced by calumny to exhibit the King's last letters of reprisal in Flanders, although, had they applied to James himself, he would have shown his high regard for Portugal. Has again revoked the reprisals, trusting that the affair may yet be satisfactorily settled, and delegates Philip Gualteroty, a Florentine merchant, in his place. He carries on business at Bruges (Brugas) and has sustained damage by the reprisals. Edward Ferdinandi will explain further. Glasgow, xi. kal. Julii, 1510.

	From Andrea Badoer, London, 25 June.—Mons. Prejam, prior, was to have gone to France to confirm the peace, but his going is deferred because the King is not of age. The news of Vicenza displeased the King. The English would gladly make a diversion, but do not wish to break the peace till next year, and would like the Pope or King of Spain to be with them. The Ambassador to the Emperor went first to the Archduke of Burgundy and Madame Margaret, leaving them on the 13th. To-morrow the said Mons. Prejam, who is a friend of the Signory, leaves for France with a Doctor (fn. 2), to tell the King of France to keep his promise not to do more against Venice than recover his own. The Emperor's ambassadors who were to come there are apparently revoked and the King of France and Emperor joined in a new league. The King of France has sent to the Emperor to repay his loan by Michaelmas, or he will have Verona. The English lords would like a league of Pope, Emperor, Spain, England and Venice. The King wants the bows which the Pezari, of London, are to give him.

	To make his peace, because she writes that his letters are often rude, he sends her a carbuncle which her grandfather the Emperor Frederic much prized. The King of Aragon, by his ambassador, has notified him of the matter of Spain for which Thoison d'Or was here, but he has not yet replied, finding it both difficult and wonderful. And, as you see the French openly threaten us and make as though they would abandon us, it is time to work in that which Toison the herald brought us. If the thing comes to the ears of the French it will make matters worse, and we know what pensioners of France the English are, for the other day they revealed all the practices of the Pope and King of Aragon to the King of France. The Pope daily makes practices to the King of France; and to us also, but we are always loyal, as you know. The cursed Pope (le maudit preter pape) would for nothing in the world have us go in arms to Rome for our crown imperial accompanied by the French, for he fears to be chaptered by us two, seeing the great sins and abuses which he and his predecessors have done and daily do, and also some cardinals who above all fear reformation, although they are wrong about us; and moreover it will soon be time to put the matter of Thoison d'Or in practice. The late alliance of England with the French will hinder us very little, "car yl n'y a point tant cumme les Françoes d'onnur par le monde à entendre par leor avantage." (fn. 4) As soon as I can learn what the Ambassador Blinsoeld, now with you on behalf of the King of England, brings us, I will write you my opinion; and meanwhile, entertain the ambassador of Aragon (who makes great suit in this matter) until the coming of your information concerning the Ambassador Blinsveld. Awaiting also your counsel upon the withdrawal of the King of France's army and the strange words of his lieutenant and captain general, the Sieur de Chamont, grand master of France. Thereupon we will by the advice of the said ambassador of Aragon begin some project and send to you to finish "tell matière." Nevertheless have I renewed practices with the King of France, hoping that he will [not ?] abandon us, although he wavers much. Written 29 June 1510.
	P.S.—You should send Thoison d'Or to us immediately, for such matters are dangerous to write.

	Thanks for his cordial letters written with his own hand, and the jewel. Gueldres.
	Would like to be wise in order to counsel him, but the matter of which he writes in so weighty that she would not dare to speak of it except by way of conversation, persisting in her opinion which is secretly to effect the thing of which she advertised him by Thoison and for which the ambassador of England will make suit, with whom she sent Guillaume Pingeon. It is a sure way of restoring our House and making you the greatest prince in the world. Continue to entertain the King of France in order that he take no sinister suspicion, and it will only remain to conduct the affair secretly. Would God you had believed me at the beginning, for all should now have been finished without bruit; and still it is better late than never, provided it be well done; but I fear, since the ambassador of Aragon has spoken to you of it and the ambassador of England will speak, that it may come to the knowledge of the French, who, between ourselves, whatever friendship there be, will do you as little good as they can. Having sent Pingeon it is not expedient to send Thoison.
