(f. 3d.)		 To Richard Broun alias Cordon, archdeacon of Rochester, D.C.L. Grant as below. Lately he received papal dispensation to hold for seven years with the said archdeaconry, which is a non-major dignity with cure, any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased [Cal. Lett. VII, p. 142]. Subsequently he received papal dispensation to hold for five years one other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible with the said archdeaconry and with the parish church of Newcherch in the diocese of Canterbury, which latter he had obtained after the above dispensation, and, resigning simply or for exchange, to hold three benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, namely two for life and a third for five years, etc. [ibid., p. 281]; after which, he having obtained and held with the said archdeaconry and church of Newcherch the parish church of Schorham and dependent chapel of Otteford in the said diocese, the pope prolonged the said five years by other two, by letters which stated that the value of the said archdeaconry and church of Newcherch, both of which he still holds, did not exceed 50l. and 25l. respectively [see above, p. 91]. It being asserted that the said values are greater, although not more than 60l. and 30l. respectively, the pope hereby grants that the aforesaid letters and dispensations shall hold good from the date thereof, as if they had expressed the true value. Indult for five years to visit by deputy the churches etc. of his said archdeaconry and to receive the procurations in ready money to a daily amount not exceeding 30 tournois of silver, twelve to the gold florin of Florence. Meruit tue devocionis.
Concurrent mandate to the abbot of St. Columba's, in the diocese of Dunkeld, and the deans of Brechin and Dunblane. Meruit dilecti filii. (fn. 2)

(f. 11d.)		 To Thomas Hokenal, perpetual vicar of Long Benyngton in the diocese of Lincoln. Dispensation to him (who formerly received papal dispensation, as the son of a priest, a canon regular, and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, in virtue of which, having been tonsured, he obtained the above vicarage) to hold two other benefices with or without cure, compatible with one another and the said vicarage, etc., and to resign all three, simply or for exchange, as often as he wishes. Grant to him, who is an abbreviator of apostolic letters, and who in councils and convocations of the clergy and people of the realm of England has laboured and daily labours without wearying for the defence of ecclesiastical liberty and the conservation and increase of the rights of the Roman church, that he may for life hold his said deanery, value not exceeding 100 marks, even if it should be (fn. 3) a major dignity, together with the benefices which he already holds and (fn. 4) with any other future benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, as if it were a benefice without cure (simplex beneficium sine cura). Et si propter ambicionem.

(f. 76.)		 To Margaret, duchess of Clarence. Indult at her recent petition—containing that, desiring to lead a celibate life, she has elected to dwell near the monastery of St. Saviour and SS. Mary the Virgin and Bridget, Syon, of the order of St. Augustine, called St. Saviour's, in the diocese of London, in which are brethren and sisters of the said order under perpetual enclosure, in order that she may be refreshed with the preaching of the brethren, etc.—that, notwithstanding a late statute made by the pope to the contrary, the brethren of her choice may leave the precincts to a distance of two miles of those parts, in order to hear her confession and grant her absolution, except in cases reserved to the apostolic see, administer to her sacraments and sacramentals, assist in making her will, and for that purpose speak and deal with honest, even secular persons of her choice, etc. Injunctum nobis.

Dispensation to him, who is of noble race and formerly received papal dispensation, as the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, to be promoted etc. as above, f. 11d, after which, having been tonsured, he obtained the above church, value not exceeding 20 marks, to hold therewith any benefices with or without cure, of any number and kind, compatible with one another and with the said church, and to resign them and it as often as he pleases, simply or for exchange. Dispensation to him, who is of noble race, and holds the house or cell called Bedemansburga in the said diocese, dependent on the said monastery and wont to be governed by monks thereof, value not exceeding 12l., to hold for life with the said cell one other benefice with cure, secular or regular, even if a parish church or a perpetual vicarage, and to resign such benefice (fn. 6) [and the said cell], simply or for exchange, as often as he wishes, and hold instead two similar or dissimilar benefices. Collation and provision (fn. 8) to him, who is a priest and is by both parents of noble race, of the archdeaconry of Connor, a major elective dignity with cure, value not exceeding 12 marks, void and reserved by the death at the apostolic see of Odo Akailti (sic); notwithstanding that he was lately received by authority of the ordinary as a canon of Raphoe. Contelorius,’ ‘Lib. clxiii …,’ etc. Another flyleaf has, in contemporary hands, ‘Rubricatus est per Greuensteyn,’ ‘Liber primus de diuersis formis, de exhibitis, de reg[ularibus], de prouisionibus prelatorum, et dignitatibus vacantibus anno xii Martini pape V,’ and ‘Philibertus.’ On the bottom edge of the volume is the hardly legible contemporary description: Liber primus … as on the flyleaf … anno xii Martini, and on the back is the usual modern repetition, in Italian, Lib[ro] 163, corrected from ‘123.’
  • 2. On f. 29 is a faculty ‘Inter desiderabilia cordis,’ dated at Ferentino 5 Kal. Aug. anno 12 [1429] and addressed ‘Carissimo in Christo filio Jacobo regi illustri.’ to found two monasteries of the order of St. Clare ‘in tuo comitatu Castrensi [the comté de Castres, dep. Tarn] seu aliis terris tue dicioni subjectis.’ The letter is printed on p. 477 of the Registrum appended to vol. X of Wadding, Annales Minorum,’ Ex lib. 1 de div. etc. an. 12 fol 29,’ and in his text, p. 145, Wadding identifies ‘Jacobus rex’ as James, comte de la Marche, king of Naples, husband of Joan II, who on account of his dissensions with his wife was living in France. Eubel, Bullarium Franciscanum, vol. VII, p. 726 No. 1867, reprints the faculty almost in full, giving as his sources ‘Reg. Vat. ser. Lat. t. 293 [i.e. the present register] f. 28 (sic). Wadd. l.c. [i.e. Wadding's Annales] reg. pont. Mart. V, n. 235.’ but, notwithstanding Wadding's identification, addresses the letter ‘Jacobo regi Scotiæ.’ adding in a footnote ‘L.c [i.e. as before, in Wadding's Annales] expressum quidem non est, cuius regni ille Iacobus sit rex;sed de rege Scotiæ tantum eo tempore agi potest.’ In Reg. Vat. CCCLIII, ff. 143d—144, are letters dated at St. Peter's, Rome, 18 Kal. May anno 4 [1421] requesting safe-conduct on behalf of the same’ carissimus in Christo filius noster Jacobus Rex illustris’ who is preparing (se disponat) to visit the pope and the apostolic see.
